The American Conservative

The lengthy Time story presents some neuroscientific evidence, as well as a great deal of anecdotal evidence, that prolonged exposure to pornography affects your brain and renders you sexually dysfunctional.

After 40 years of peer-reviewed research, scholars can say with confidence that porn is an industrial product that shapes how we think about gender, sexuality, relationships, intimacy, sexual violence and gender equality — for the worse.

Extensive scientific research reveals that exposure to and consumption of porn threaten the social, emotional and physical health of individuals, families and communities, and highlights the degree to which porn is a public health crisis rather than a private matter. But just as the tobacco industry argued for decades that there was no proof of a connection between smoking and lung cancer, so, too, has the porn industry, with the help of a well-oiledpublic relations machine, denied the existence of empirical research on the impact of its products.

This psychological phenomenon has consequences. As Time and others have noted, those addicted to porn tend to struggle with even the basic elements of interpersonal relationships. But the consequences also go far beyond social skills. Pornography doesn’t just absorb libido, it replaces it with something completely different. This is why, for example, Kevin Williamson saw scores of men paying for access to an adult entertainment convention when cheaper and legal prostitution was nearby. What these men want, by definition, isn’t a sexual experience but a pornographic one.

This gets at the heart of what I think professor Burk meant when he said “civilizational calamity.” Porn doesn’t supplement sex. It replaces it. And what many in our culture are beginning to understand is that whatever it replaces it with is an acid to healthy sexual psychology.

I'm not going to disagree with all of it...
but the following is a little hypocritical : "It teaches young men to use women for sex and then to discard them when they become unwilling or uninteresting. This means that it has given us a generation of young men completely unprepared for marriage and for fatherhood."

Women are letting themselves be used and discarded and actually using and discarding men for sex. The women similar to the men are unprepared for marriage and motherhood.

I talk to my younger friends and, even considering I'm not that old, I'm floored by what is happening.

Yeah I know, " back when I was younger
..blah blah blah"....no really, back when I was younger it really was different.

A lot of people just don't want to hear it, for some it will be ignorance, others denial.

So, nothing will happen.

Sex as a product is more endemic in this culture than tobacco ever was. Particularly because of the link it bears to our most basic evolutionary desires.

"The sexual revolution promised us more sex and more pleasure. It has actually delivered to us a generation of men who think of women as objects to be used and abused for their sexual pleasure. It has not given us men who know what virtue and honor are. It doesn’t teach men to pursue their joy in self-sacrificially loving and being sexually faithful to one woman for life. It teaches young men to use women for sex and then to discard them when they become unwilling or uninteresting. This means that it has given us a generation of young men completely unprepared for marriage and for fatherhood."

This is where these guys lose credibility to me.  This sort of self righteous spiritual bullshit is the same argument as "Kids these days aren't as good as my generation was".  Similar to the stories about kids who smoked pot then died when they jumped off a building trying to fly.  People like porn in the same way that they like food and money.  It's quite literally genetically hardwired into humans to like sex.  Sure, people get addicted to it, but I'd argue that alcoholism is far more common, destructive, and socially accepted.  Where's the outrage with that?  What is this, footloose?

Government use of a pseudo science to  mandate what is legal to protect  psychological development.

For the children.

I am sure, they wouldn't use that mandate to target other groups once they have gained legitimacy by manipulating the moral virtues of the masses.

"This is why, for example, Kevin Williamson saw scores of men paying for access to an adult entertainment convention when cheaper and legal prostitution was nearby. What these men want, by definition, isn’t a sexual experience but a pornographic one. "

That is the most asinine and convoluted use of logic I've seen all day.

Why even assume that people going to a PORN convention want to see anything but PORN?

It's not like it pulled away a guy looking for a hooker.

There are also multiple studies out indicating that porn correlates with lower incidents of rape and sexual assault.  The theory being that it is much easier to fap and go to bed than attempt to rape someone.

"The bottom line on these experiments is, "More Net access, less rape." A
10 percent increase in Net access yields about a 7.3 percent decrease
in reported rapes. States that adopted the Internet quickly saw the
biggest declines. And, according to Clemson professor Todd Kendall,
the effects remain even after you control for all of the obvious
confounding variables, such as alcohol consumption, police presence,
poverty and unemployment rates, population density, and so forth."

Like all things in life moderation is key. Men have always enjoyed eating and screwing,  now with easy access to both we have Wal-Mart scooters and single moms. Cut off the government supports of both (welfare, medical etc..) and it wouldn't be near as big of a problem.

The main problem with that study is it believes rape is just sex.  It is far from it.  Rape is ultimate control,  violence, domination, the desire to harm or kill a woman by the use of a cock as it is the most demeaning way the rapist can control the woman.  Yes, hot women probably are at a higher likelihood to get raped but that is because they are more desirable in society so having some form of dominance over them is what drives the rapist. A normal man would not normally get a hard on trying to fuck a fighting or crying or unwilling woman, let alone an 80 yr old, a severely disabled, some filthy street person or other women who become victims.  The rapist is looking for domination and control, not sex.

Fiscal aspect. You have an entire generation of men who state the will never get married because of the financial repercussions of divorce and the way courts treat men with child custody. Porn is probably a cheaper, less drama psychological experience for this cohort.

Feminism has ruined marriage.

Divorces become so financially devastating to men, they don't think it's worthwhile to get married anymore, or even involve themselves in meaningful relationships.

After the shit I went through with my divorce, I really don't want to do it again.
