Poll will be up in a jiffy. This topic stems from a discussion a friend and I have had about the most popular caliber for LE carry. All the calibers in the poll were mentioned. I have my predictions, and he has his. Please vote for the caliber of your primary carry handgun. Thanks.

Oh, btw, current LEO only for this poll. Thanks!

ETA: If you are not LE but want to view the results, click the "vote" button without selecting any of the poll options.

So how are non-LEO's supposed to see results unless we vote?

Fail.

If you only want LEOs to get in here, you would be better off asking it in the brothers of the shield section.

How are you going to tell LEO's from non LEO's ?

.40 will probably be your poll winner. I'm pretty sure it is the most used caliber in duty pistols right now

Wouldn't surprise me. Those new M&Ps are something else! Y'all should be really happy with them.

I already have 3 (MP9, MP40, MP45) that I have purchased. You can say I'm a fan of them

.40

We have our choice but most of our officers are carrying .40's.  Mostly Glocks and M&P's.

It was originally posted in GD...

.40 isn't a bad round by any means, just not really any better than 9mm or .45 when properly applied.

I've carried it in the past and would not hesitate to do so again.

SIG P-226 9mm with Ranger 127 +P+ or 115 +P+  is what I usually carry.
9mm is easier on the wallet to practice with than with larger calibers.

Practice with what you carry. Your BUG should be in the same caliber also, but I do understand money is a factor with firearms & ammo these days. Any caliber will kill. I love our .40 Sigs coupled with the Federal Hydrashock ammo we use.

I'm lucky - my department allows us to carry whatever we want so long as it's on an "approved list" of pistols. HK USP 45 it is.

BTW, where was the choice for .223?? That's my *real* primary.

I'm speaking empirically here...some dept's require this for liability reasons. Plus you are familiar with the ballistics (in some cases, although different guns can run differently using the same ammo), the possibility of mixing up your ammo is lessened & if you're lucky, you work for a dept that will issue you the same duty ammo for use in your bug, saving you money.

Does anyone here carry or know any other LEOs who carry a .22lr handgun, for either primary or backup? We have had 3 more .22lr votes since being moved to this forum---thoughts?

Actually, I have a K9 buddy on my shift who carries one. He has a little 2 shot bug that looks like a folder which he clips inside his trouser pocket. Not my first choice, but he likes it. He also carries a baby Glock .40 on his ankle though.

Dept issues S&W 5906 9mm.  Our division is issued Sig P226 .40.  We are in the process of doing the paperwork to switch our division over to the Sig P220 .45.  It needs to be approved as we need to buy other gear to fit it, which upsets the bean counters.

Since you only asked for LEO's, I didn't vote.

For armed security work, I carry an XD in .45ACP.  If it matters, the Portland, OR, police bureau is packing almost exclusively .45ACP Glocks last I knew.  For unarmed, well, that is another thread.

Rest of the Dept carries Glocks in .40 (22C's if you want the model number )

Just wondering. I carry .40 as a primary (issued) and a 9mm as a BUG (my choice)

Because my friend seems to think it's a popular choice for LE. He wouldn't take my word for it...

Depends in the mood I'm in.   G27 or Kel-tec 380.
We carry th G22 for duty use.  We're also given the choice of carrying a different weapon for side jobs, so long as we qualify with them.
Therefor I carry a Kimber 45cal.
