An attempted murder suspect tried to run over two Birmingham police officers Sunday afternoon when the officers stopped him on a routine traffic violation.

The South Precinct officers pulled the motorist over at 104 Sixth Ave. South in front of Leonard's Bar B Q & Burger Hut about 4:30 p.m.

The officers asked him for his driver license, but he said he didn't have one, said Sgt. Lee Kerzic.

When the officers ordered him out of the car, he put the car in reverse and tried to run them over.

He then accelerated forward and tried to drive through the restaurant's outdoor seating area, hitting a planter and shoving one car into another, Kerzic said.

The officers hit the emergency button on their police radios asking for all possible help. One officer used a police baton to smash the suspect's window and spray him and a female passenger with Mace, Kerzic said.

Police then learned the man, whose name they didn't release, had an outstanding attempted murder warrant, and several misdemeanor warrants, Kerzic said.

The officers weren't injured.

Nothing ever happens during a routine traffic stop.

That's right, because if it did, it would not be routine.............
