Investigators find sheriff's department helicopter was shot down
Wednesday August 10, 2005
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) A sheriff's department helicopter that crashed behind a home in Albuquerque during the weekend was brought down by gunfire, authorities said Tuesday.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White said authorities have no suspects yet but are working with the FBI.

Investigators examining the wreckage Monday noticed what appeared to be a small hole in the windshield of the cockpit, White said. ``Deputies also located several items that are consistent with a bullet that has fragmented upon impact.''

Both the civilian pilot and the deputy on board when the helicopter crashed early Saturday survived with minor injuries.

White said the pilot and deputy were assisting deputies on the ground who were investigating a burglary call when the helicopter lost power. The pilot told White he heard a pop, then felt the helicopter pitch and shut down.

The helicopter landed about 15 feet from the back of a house.

``Let me be very clear, we intend to use every resource available to track down the coward who is responsible for committing this sick and twisted act,'' the sheriff said.

Damn.

Probably a lucky shot, or the bad guys are actually learning how to shoot (scary).

Its those damn 50 cals!

So small arms fire, huh?
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 9:42:54 PM EDT
Wow, why would a bullet that fragmented in the windshield cause the chopper to shut down? Fragments hit something else?
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 9:42:54 PM EDT
Interesting. What type of Helo is this?
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 9:42:58 PM EDT
Damn glad that the deputy and pilot came out okay!

That was probably just something they noticed. A fragment could have continued through some electrical components, or some other bullet that they haven't found yet might have hit somewhere more vital.

[SWAT] Musta been a .50, nothing else counda' done that [/SWAT]

This is just the beginning of the .50 cal terror!

BAN 50'S, IT'S FOR THE AIR TRAFFIC

The local police chopper here was telling the other pilot who was just coming on shift (123.025 UNICOM) that someone was lasering them, and had done so about four times a couple nights ago. They pretty much figured out the area, but I don't know if they actually found the person.

Haven't you guys seen Dreamcatcher? A small pistol will down a helo in no time.

Seriously, they fly pretty low sometimes and it wouldn't take much to hit them with small arms.

DiFi was right!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Or maybe a part of the engine blew.

Let me guess: it was a .50 cal sniper rifle?

So one bullet shot down a ghetto bird? That's a hell of a lucky shot. They need to start looking for the man with the Golden Gun.

I dunno, man. It's a pretty ballsy thing to shoot down a police helicopter.

Something does not compute. There should probably be another hole or two near the engine or another critical component.

The sheriff seems a little upset.

A 30-06 could just have easily done it, if it hit the right spot.
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 11:42:17 PM EDT
Pleasantly surprised that the crew survived.
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 11:48:42 PM EDT
Sounds interesting, but I think I will wait for the FAA's investigation results..... Somehow I don't think anyone on that department is even remotely qualified to determine the cause of a crash.

There may well be more holes, but its a wreck, so the bullet damage may not be obvious.

I'm not surprised at all that this should happen, the fact that it hasn't untill now is surprising.

From watching guys play Battlefield 2, I know it takes at least 200 rounds fired from a machine gun before a helicopter even begins to smoke.z

Well if no one else is gonna make the obvious cheesy reference I will..

Damn! Ol' Henry Bowman just pulled another Billy Dell..

No, then there would be a hole instead of a windshield, not one in it.

I see helo's come back from missions all the time with bullet holes in them. Holes in the rotors, holes in the windshield ect and they are perfectly able to fly home. Now when you take a rounds in the transmission, or the transmission oil cooler your fooked. I had to help pick up the pieces of a Huey that took rounds in the transmission oil cooler, and well it kinda fell out of the sky really hard if you know what I mean.

Will transmission damage prevent it from autorotating?

It did in this case, while the rotor was turning, it didnt provide enough lift. Im no Helo mech or pilot, I just fix the weapons systems, so I cant talk super technical.

I'll bet there was a dog on board the helo and the police on the ground were shooting at it.

The pilot told White he heard a pop, then felt the helicopter pitch and shut down

Wow. A pop. Must be gunfire.

That combined with a small hole in the windshield of a helicopter that crashed?????

Case closed....

Seriously....this is a dept trying to CYA so insurance will cover them despite faulty maintenance or pilot error.

Probably fired from on top of the Washington Monument. According to Senator's it can bring down a commercial aircraft from 4 or 5 miles away.

According to the news this morning the pilot underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments from his leg. They are now saying that the round went through the lower bubble, hit the left pedal, and pilot and dropped 400 feet in about 4 seconds. No doubt some drunken douchebag got a lucky shot. New Mexico is full of dipshits like this.
