Police Officer ~~Accidentally~~ NEGLIGENTLY Shoots House
December 27, 2005 - Waterloo

A police officer investigating shots fired in Waterloo, accidentally fired his own weapon.

Police say it happened last night on the corner of East Mullen and Lafayette Streets.

A block away, the bullet struck a house at 201 Mulberry Street.

News Channel Seven went to the house where we found a window broken by the bullet.

People living in the home tell us the bullet damaged some woodwork inside the house.

Waterloo Police Captain Bruce Arends says officers were responding to what they believed was gunfire when it happened.

He said, "It's not a common occurrence at all. It rarely happens, we certainly look into the issue and we take every action that would be appropriate."

No one was hurt in this incident. As of noon today, Waterloo Police won't tell us the name of the officer who fired the shot.

Captain Arends says all officers must pass a required firearm training course twice a year to carry a gun.

Yep, it would have to be accidental. I know very few cops that could hit a house on purpose.

Kidding. This was just an ND. He wasn't "fanning the neighborhood."
