It's that most wonderful time of the year, when police illegally stop drivers so they can hand them gift cards, all recorded on camera for public relations purposes.
The recurring gimmick is meant to show police officers have "heart," and just about all the videos of such stunts show drivers displaying the same hidden camera game show-type reaction, where their tense and concerned face drops in relief and laughter as they realize they've been lovably duped by an armed agent of the state. View Quote Anybody here ever do this/have this happen to them? Do the cops just wait outside stores looking for families and follow them or is it just randomly pulling cars over? |

Sounds like a good excuse to pull people over without probable cause. Find nothing, here's your card.
|

|
Haven't been pulled over in close to a decade. If they pull me over without probable cause, it better be to award me one of those comically-giant checks, because they're violating my 4th Amendment rights.
|
|
What if someone runs?
Lots of trabajo types here who don't want to get pulled over. |
|
As a cop I think they are a really bad idea and would not want to be associated with one. If a department wants to help others there are much better ways to do so.

The wife and I were driving through Empire, CO on the way to Grand Lake for Memorial Day weekend many years ago...
The police in Empire were notorious for catching speeders, so I was driving a little under the limit. We get pulled over, and I'm like WHAT?? The cop proceeds to tell me I was driving great, and gave us a gift basket with cheeses, crackers, and candy and said have a great weekend. |
|
As a cop I would not want to do that.
It's embarrassing getting pulled over. They could just walk up to folks in the mall and do the same thing. |

Yeah departments okaying this are numb nuts. Just asking for trouble.

I wonder how many, "Am I being detained?" responses get edited out.
|
|
Am I the only one that wishes they would pull over someone with a CCW in a state with a duty to inform the officer that they're carrying?
That would make liberal heads explode. |
|
I'm a cop. Heck, I worked today.
I would NOT do this, even if told to. Illegal stops are ILLEGAL for a reason. Now if you want me to cut people breaks on some stops I'd normally write warnings or fix it tickets on anyways sure, I'll cut some breaks and hand out your presents. |

"We told you to pull over!" For what? "So we could thank you for being law-abiding! But you had to do things THE HARD WAY.... MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS, CIVILIAN. Press hard, you're making three copies." |

Around here the big city Pd and fire department take some kids from the ghetto to the mall, seems like a better idea than handing me a pannini grill on a traffic stop. |

Traffic stops are not a time to be fucking around. It is all fun and publicity til it goes south on either a driver or a cop. We don't do that silly shit, and we do a lot to help folks who need help out.

Cute stunts like this won't be so funny when some poor cop gets lit up on one of these stops. My theory was that you NEVER pull someone over to give a warning. Don't make a stop unless you plan on taking some real enforcement action.
Cops don't want to do this stuff. It all comes from admins, non street cops. |

What should I have done differently? Tell them to shove that cheese basket up their ass and stop effecting seizures in violation of the 4th Amendment. You give up the cheese basket, but then the dipshits might quit doing it and maybe even talk to the brass about the importance of police following the law. When I was a cop, I didn't have to be told not to violate the 4th Amendment. I swore an oath not to violate it, cheese baskets or not. |

View Quote I've seen some LEO's who post here who would disagree with that. IIRC, he stops people for ticketable violations, and gives them a warning so that in the future they might not do it again. I recall a Mother's Day AMA from an on duty cop, and the only ticket he gave out from all his stops was to a mother, with her child in the car I believe, because she was a bitch the whole stop. Everyone else he stopped got a warning. Because of her attitude, he gave her the gift of a ticket for Mother's Day. I think she blew a stop sign. Someone will be along to correct me shortly. An aside from that, my dad designs jails, so I've known a shitload of cops growing up. One thing a cop told me about talking to the police, he never had a suspect talk their way out of a ticket, or an arrest, but he had plenty of idiots talk their way into a ticket or an arrest. Choose your words carefully, because cops are not your friend when they have a legal reason to stop you. ETA: Realized that last sentence sounded anti-cop a bit, that was the cops words to me. |
