I saw some of these 25 years ago in some book, so I decided to dig around for them on the internet. I found more than I bargained for. Navsource has oodles of pics of damn near any ship. Here are some from the Pearl Harbor aftermath.

Damn Red X's

BTW- A good book on the salvage of pearl harbor is "Descent into Darkness" by Ed Raymer. He was a salvage diver trying to work through the aftermath. The book gives you a new appreciation of what exactly woke the dragon.......

I think I've heard about this book. I just couldn't recall the title. He details how they brought bodies out of the USS Arizona until ordered to stop?

That's the book. Interesting stuff. Evidently Raymer's team snuck a bunch of the Arizona's 1911's from her armory while salvaging and had them rebuilt by armorer buddies for themselves. I think one idiot gave his to a local who was later arrested by MP's. When they ran the serial numbers they put two and two together and eventually shook the team down for the ramaining pistols. Kinda wonder what happened to them after that..........
