The dead creature was mistaken for a beached whale when first reported about a week ago, but experts who went to see it said the 40-foot-long mass of decomposing lumpy gray flesh apparently was an invertebrate. Chilean scientists look at the creature near Puerto Montt, July 1, 2003. Scientists said on Wednesday that the huge mass may be a rare type of giant octopus or just discarded whale blubber. The CDC confirmed monkeypox infection in one Gambian rat, three dormice, and two rope squirrels shipped to the U.S. in April. The animals were kept in close contact with prairie dogs at a Texas importer which were shipped to Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The CDC suspects 81 people were infected by the animals and confirmed 33 cases. A Gambian Giant Pouched rat is seen in this undated file photo. July 2, 2003. Environmentalists in several cities across the United States gathered to demonstrate against what they claim are recent government plans to scrap the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which protects 58.5 million acres of national forests from logging and road-building. The stamp, showing the Washington memorial's statues shrouded in heavy snow reminiscent of winter fighting in Korea, is about to become a U.S. postage stamp honoring Korean War veterans. The Korean War Veterans Memorial features 19 stainless-steel statues that depict American troops in the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force marching in a wedge formation as if on patrol. The United States is being called to the rescue of Liberia - yanked by old bonds most Americans never knew the United States had. The two nations have had economic and strategic ties dating back to 1822, when James Monroe dispatched soldiers to escort ashore the first freed American slaves, who founded the nation with a U.S.-style constitution.
