The little lady and I sat down the other day to seriously discuss the wedding planning issue.

She asked who would fill the Best man and Groomsmans positions. I was stumped. Having to fill 4 positions?

Hell, best i could do was bat 50%

Through high school & 3\4 of college  i have only really associated with two people... and they filled the 50%.

I have two positions to fill and would really feel awkward asking someone i really didn't hang out with or know well to be in my wedding.

It's just sad. Pathetic really.

So the question is...

Were your Best man and Groomsmans close friends? or did you just fill positions with people you knew?

Don't put someone in there just to fill the suit if you don't really know him. Nothing wrong with only 1 or 2 guys.

All of mine were good friends for years.

Real simple ... DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Save the thousands of $$$ on the whole church wedding and put it all into the downpayment on your house or paying off your student loans or feeding wild horses. ANYTHING is better than pissing it away on a one day fling with 300 of the closet people in the world that you'll never see again.

But hey, I'm jaded.

Have a great wedding and may you both be happy forever.

I don't have an answer for ya, since I'm not there yet.  However, I'm sure I'll be having the same issues.  I don't make many friends, because those I consider friends are in my innermost circle of trust, in there along side my family.  The friends I do have I've had for many years, the two closest friends I've known for over 15 years (keep in mind I'm in only my mid-twenties).

IMHO, make your closest friends the best man/groomsmen.  If you don't have enough, don't fill it.  It is a place of honor and reverence, and I feel that it shouldn't be cheapened.

Yup.  I plan on only having 2 or 3.

Don't just fill spots.  If you don't have people you trust there, don't do it. My best man and groomsmen were all people that I'd been through shit with, and each one was a good enough friend to offer to provide cover fire with I ran out the back.

Easy advice to give to guys, not so easy to the bride...especially if her family has offered to cover all costs

You're screwed either way.

If you elope, you'll hear ' I wish we would have had a nice wedding, all my friends had nice weddings'
If you have a regular wedding your wife will say ' maybe we should have just eloped'

but, if you elope and stay married for a few years (probably at the 5 yr mark)
your wife will want to get 'remarried' so she can have all the pics and all the crap that goes along with it.

FWIW, when money gets tight we always say ' I wish we had the money spent on our wedding' ($12k) but we really are glad we had it.  Great time, great memories.

Talk to her dad, they usually only pay out of tradition.

in a pinch, go with close male relatives around your age.

when my time comes, I've got a brother and 3 cousins I could call on in a bind.

Of course, my hope is that all I'm going to have to do is go in front of a judge with the lucky lady.

As long as it makes her happy, I don't care if they drop $100K on it.

In answer to your question, do you have any brothers, does she have brothers, do you have cousins you were close to?

I only had 3 including the best man, but they were like bros to me with what we had been through the last 10 years.  Talk to the bride.  Does she HAVE to have 4 bridesmaids or will she compromise.  Mine originally wanted four or five in the party but decided there were only 3 that really were that important.
