Think it'll be enough? I can always get something bigger, you know how tough those bushytails are:
It's one of the new Remington 798s, the 98 Mausers they are having made for them in Serbia (sorry, no toes).
CRF, as you of course want in a dangerous game rifle. Was a little stubborn getting the rounds from the mag to the chamber, 'spect it needs some breaking in. Mostly, it seems to be a gun that needs to be cycled vigorously... which shouldn't be a problem, should you
need to fire it to save your ass.
Holds three in the mag, one in the pipe, with TWO, count 'em TWO stock crossbolts, 26" barrel. Seems a little long, but as the guy who did my paperwork said, they make 'em that way on the idea that you can always cut the barrel down, but it's a little tough to screw more barrel on. Oh, and it balances BEyewtifully, right at the front receiver ring, just as it should. Really relatively light, a delight in the hands. Whoever put this bad boy together surely knew their business.
This is what she fires. Needless to say, she backs up a little.
I was wearing two warmup jackets and a Pacmeyer shoulder pad, and it still gave me a pretty good lick in the chops. Needless to say, I will be making up some light cast-bullet loads, so's I can shoot this sweetie without her beating me up so bad. 510 grain bullets whop you pretty good.
Tho of course the receiving end doesn't have it so good, either.
This is the result of three rounds.
But I think I may have gotten cheated. There ain't too damn much barrel there!
Fairly accurate, considering... considering it's got huge, crude "OMFG that big thing is coming right at me!!!!" sights. Oh, and considering I was flat-out skeert of the thing!
This is at 50 yards:
What do I have it for? I dunno, rampaging elephants? Not too many of those in Pennsy, but never too soon to get prepared for global warming to turn my AO tropical. I only fired four rounds before I concluded that was enough fun for one day, and picked up a "mere" .30-'06 to let my shoulder recover; I can only imagine what that thing was like back in the days of steel buttplates
. Now I need to pick up another 1907 sling for it, which will allow me to hold onto the fucking thing a little more securely!
And, as I said, some downloaded rounds are in order (e-bay already delivered my used RCBS dies). I will also need to reload because the little honey is an EXPENSIVE bitch to feed! My God, you're lucky to find ammo for less than $80 for 20 rounds!
Were I to carry it everyday, like if I lived someplace dangerous like Africa or Alaska or Detroit, I'd definitely make some mods. For one, I'd prolly lop a few inches off that barrel, while adding epoxied shot to the forearm to maintain that great balance. And
definitely I'd put it in a fiberglass stock, for the weather-resistance and toughness (I'd always worry the stock would split just as a rhino was charging me). And I'd look into Robar or one of those other miracle finishes, to keep it from rusting. A 1-4x variable wouldn't be out of line, or at least a ghost ring mated to one of those bright fiber optic or Trijicon front sights.
But mostly, I've just always wanted an honest-to-God elephant rifle, and now I have one. She'll mostly be a safe queen; who the hell wants to fire a beast like that every day? But it's a really fun toy, and I'm looking forward to making up some loads for her (Christ, even the
brass is $$$$!).
