That rope doesn't look like steel cable.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:20:24 AM EDT
My vote is fake

Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:21:31 AM EDT
Getting the bear in all the perfect positions to photoshop in would be next to impossible. That rope sure is tied tight, but it is not out of the question for it to support the bear's weight. I think they're real.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:21:49 AM EDT
cool! I always wanted to have a cub for a pet, but they always shoot 'em when they wander over from PA.

Looks real to me.

It looks like yellow nylon rope.
That stuff could be strong enough, I think.
I did a quick google search and found some 3-strand twisted 3/4 inch rated at 1650 lb tensile strength.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:23:05 AM EDT
I think they're real too. Patty
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:25:42 AM EDT
not that big of a bear i would guess maybe #180 to #200 .
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:25:56 AM EDT
fake or not, those are some funny pictures. i wouldnt guess that bird seed tastes that good.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:26:58 AM EDT
Pics are real, bear is fake (it's a guy dressed in a bear suit).

my vote is real.
She (I'm guessing) must really like bird seed or the birds in it.

That's one impressive bear.

I just don't think a bear could get across a line like that. Maybe a chimp could, but a bear's paws aren't like human fingers. I doubt it could hold on to the line properly much less make it all the way across while balancing itself to get to the bird feeder.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 11:36:08 AM EDT
they look real to me. I don't see anything that would make me think it is not. they thick nylon cord and the way a black bear bends his body seems realistic to me. I'm guessing the guy was quite far away taking these shots or else the black bear would not be there. Also seems the bear has done this before since he didn't fall this time. They learn pretty quick.

The feeder probably has suet in it. Only thing i can think of right off hand that would attract both song birds and bears.

Removed. I had no intention of starting an argument.

I would say they have to be fake. Look at the following:

1. First pic - The Squirrel stopper (round flat disk) is right between the bears paw and head, and looks to be maybe 8-12 inches in diameter. In all the rest of the pics, it looks dish shaped (like for a dog that had ear surgery) and at least 18 inches in diameter.

2.First pic the bear is staring directly at the camera???

3. If you were watching a bear from that close, would you move in closer and change angles for each picture????

4. If the rope is strong enough to hold the bear does any one see a branch that would be strong enough to hold up the bear in the first pic??

Of course in the 2nd pic the birdhouse does appear to moving (as it should with a bear hanging on the rope), where as it appears to be stationary in the other pcs.

OMG its on the Intarweb it must be a photoshop.

You guys are silly, not every pic on the net is photoshop.

Image #1 What's holding the bear up? And the tree again looks like the victim of the photoshop eraser tool.

Image #2 the bear image is crisp, but the birdhouse is a little blurry. So is the cord to the left, like they are in motion.

Image #3 Looks like a really bad eraser job under the bear. The branch looks like it was edited to be in front of them. But some leaves under his back are clearly behind him. Look at the other photos. There's no other foliage that close. The border of the bear is just to flat on his back. Like he was cut out with sissors and planted on the page.

Image #4 The bear is crisp, and the birdhouse is blurry. There's a lot more light reflecting off the top of the birdhouse, and none off the bear

A#1 the rope is holding the bear up.

#2 the rope is moving cuz the bear is hanging from it.

#3 whatever

#4 the top of the bidhouse is weathered so it looks brighter, besides how much light do you think BLACK bear fur will reflect?
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 12:08:45 PM EDT
FAKE.

The edges of the bear look fake. And I think it would be possible for someone to take some bear pictures and twist them into the right positions. Well done though.

Real,

I see very little aritfating in these photos that would suggest that it has been erased, or had an image inserted.

Link Posted: 9/30/2005 12:11:50 PM EDT
Those pictures were posted in the Juneau Empire a few months ago. Some lady took them from her backyard........Ill see if i can find the article. Also the black bears really arent that big, the picture i think in exaggerating the size of the bear more than his acrobatics.

They are real %100. I got them a while back from a Florida Park Ranger. They are of a Black Bear in someones back yard. I could probably dig up the data.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 12:29:57 PM EDT
The first one looks fake, while the others look real.

In the first picture, the bear's fur comes around the bark of the tree in front of him, although it is several feet behind the tree.
Link Posted: 9/30/2005 12:31:49 PM EDT
I believe they are authentic.

If you doubt a black bear is capable of doing this, you obviously have not spent much time around them. They are very determined and resourceful when it comes to getting food.

Thats what I was thinking however if you blow it up in Photoshop (I'm using PS7) you will see that the fur that is coming arond the tree is from the way the bear is holding himself to the tree. At first I thought the bear was on the ground, he is using his left arm to hold onto the rope and has his rear leg wrapped slightly around the tree trunk, he is uning his claws on that rear leg to dig into the tree.

That's not a person in a bear suit.

Look at how the bear has it's hind legs, a person could not do that unless they were a midget, and then their trunk/abdomen wouldn't be long enough to have their arms in the position there were in.

Those nylon ropes are strong as hell if they haven't been weathered very much.

If you don't think a black bear could do that, you know nothing about them. They are EXPERT tree climbers, I've seen a few climb up trees faster than squirrels can.

ETA: My thought is that the bird feeder was on the pole, and thats how the bear found out he/she liked it, bear kept eating the stuff, the owner didn't know why the stuff was being eaten so quickly, assumed it was squirrels or something.

So what do you do when animals keep eating stuff out of your bird feeder?

You hang it in the air between two trees.

The photo's were probably taken off someone's back porch, most likely with a telephoto lens.

Because who puts a bird feeder where they can't see the birds?
