Maybe it was a hoax....but what if he really did it?

Any doubts about what men might have done back in the day? In THOSE days?

Now, of course, if someone did it TODAY, he'd face more than a courts martial.... but thinking this through theologically....from Al Qaeda's perspective.... would those terrorists be damned or not? If the answer is yes, then suddenly the idea has strategic (albeit questionably ethical) currency. If not, if some Mullah would just come out with some ruling that it doesn't matter, etc. then it'd be Abu Ghraib all over again.

If an enemy thinks it has nothing to fear from continuing a given tactic, they'll keep at it. The Mafia for example rule southern Italy because of centuries of 'hits' on innocent people to give a warning to their targets to pay the mob protection money. Most people were 'wise' enough to just pay the money rather than fight back. But the Mafia tried to move into the Northern Italian provinces where most people speak German and they tried the same tactic. Instead of paying the money, the NORTHERN Italians fought back in the same way: they ID-ed some of the mob's "innocents" and threatened to execute every last one of them. Suddenly the mob was no longer invincible.

So what do Al Qaeda types value? What do they abhor? I'm pretty sure offering to try them in US Civil courts and provide them with Geneva rights isn't making them quake in their sandals.

Guerrilla warfare was a total joke until the pussies passed Article 51 of the Geneva Conventions.

If your quarry goes to ground, leave no ground to go to - Sun Tzu

"the guerrilla moves amongst the people as a fish swims in .... If you cannot catch the fish, you have to drain the sea." -Mao Tse-tung

And it worked from Alexander to MacArthur. We won't win another war, no one will, save those who remember how to fight, or never learned Geneva like Al Qaeda who can control a country with 2% population, until these silly notions about not targeting the militants support network i.e. civilians, ends.
