I'm curious as to the origin of the term "faggot" in the context of an homosexual. It used to mean an ember. A "fag" meant cigarette in certain British slang. And, there is "fagged out" as in very tired or worn out.

As a matter of.......

Rita Adessa, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Lesbian and Gay Task Force called the outburst inexcusable and said they won't just go away with an apology.

and from one of the web boards

Not only that, but coming from a Democrat.... just goes to show (yet again) that the Dems aren't all our friends, either. There's lotsa bigots on both sides of the aisle.

And I dunno what Republicans Robert Jubelirer are David J. Brightbill like, but just 'coz they're Republicans doesn't automatically make 'em evil scumbags. They vfery well *may* be, but there's a few decent Republicans, too. A **few**.... although most of those have been leaving the party in disgust, lately.

As I said to a friend years ago, I'd rather deal with a conservative with principles than an opportunist pig who merely **calls** themselves a socialist (or liberal) and has no ethics or principles at all.

Same place "flamer" came from, maybe?

In English slang well up into the 20th century, a "fag" was a boy at a boarding school who provided menial services to a wealthier boy, including (but presumably not limited to) doing laundry, cleaning up, and general stepping and fetching. I'm betting that the reputation of English boarding schools as hotbeds of homosexuality, combined with the status of the boy known as the "fag" is the origin of "fag" as slang for a homosexual.

Yep, if somebody fagged you out, I imagine you might end up feeling tired or worn out.

Webster would say it is a bundle a sticks. Why is a bundle of sticks equated with a gay man?

In the inquisition of Europe, when witches were being burned, among those sought out for
burning were gay people. They were required to gather the very "bundles of sticks" (the real
meaning of a faggot) with which they would be burnt. When the faggots (sticks) were running
out, gay men were thrown on the fire to keep it going for the witches. Faggot came to mean gay
man to force them into the closet for fear of death.

This is my understanding from the etymology books I'm familiar w/... or at least USED to be familiar with
