Right after asking if he rides in a child seat in the back, and before asking if he still takes a bottle.

I just answered ten other questions with yes or no, kind of a bad time to say "I don't want answer that question."

I suppose next time I'll just say "he's allowed all his constitutional protections in our house. "

I have only had one doctor ask this and I just said No and let it be and never went back.  In today's world, I would probably tell them guns are icky and then go to a different pediatrician.

It keeps you off the list they are compiling and skews their data collection.

Then go buy another gun just to spite them.

I know a pediatrician who teaches the parents of his patients the 4 commandments of gun safety.

Of course, this is Kansas where even pediatricians love to shoot.

No, it has nothing to do with lead in my experience.  Some health groups require the question to make sure the child isn't "at risk for violence."  The docs I know who ask it use it as an opportunity to discuss proper gun safety and storage rather than to disparage gun ownership (which I believe is the intent of the question).  Good for them.

Now that you mention it, they did ask when our house was built, if we remodeled recently, and if he has been around anyone with lead poisoning, but I think these were all separate from the gun question. Can't remember exactly.

Highly educated + anti-gun doctor is going to look at you like you are a 5 year old trying to tell their parents why they should be able to stay up all night eating candy bars and watching spongebob DVDs.

The TLDR of that is no matter how logical your argument is.  He isn't going to be impressed or listening.

Shit, my peds doc asked this question once as well (in Colorado).  After i laughed, I said its quite the opposite.  As a matter of fact, I have guns in every room of the house.  I already built her an evil assualt rifle and i have a pic of her on my phone with my 1911.

I'm sick of the liberal BS.  I am an American, I am a gun owner, and I'm proud of it.  My kids are raised in the gun culture, and are well acquinted with firearms.

On a side note, I was in Maryland last year talking hunting to a co-worker (who resides in MD) and he somehow transitioned into how the gunshow loophole is the reason why bad people have guns and if we closed teh gunshow loophole, there wouldn't be anymore shootings.  After I laughed out loud, I told him the only thing going to stop criminals from shooting innocent people is MORE GUNS!!  If more peple carried guns, when the crazies start shooting, we could shoot back and kill the POS before he did any harm.  The guy slowly eased away from me and didnt talk to me the rest of the week.  And the guys a retired infantry Colonel.

^This^

My kid's pediatrician asked me if there were guns in the home and he already knew what I did for a living, LEO, which I looked at him like he was stupid and answered of course there are, it kinda is a job requirement for me. I did assure him that the guns were secured, which seemed to make him feel better.

If your doctor is stupid enough to believe that jacketed bullets (or un-jacketed for that matter) have any role in lead absorption in a child you should run, not fucking walk out of that office.

It has precicely dick, zilch, nothing, zero, nada, to do with lead.  It has everything to do with convincing gullible mommies that dad's revolver is a menace to the home.

All of the doctors around here used to hunt. One of them worked with the school and he and a lot of the students used to bring their new guns to school after Christmas to see what everybody got. Small southern town. 1980s. I had one doctor ask me that about my son in the 90s in a different town. I asked him if he liked to shoot. He said no. I said, well, we'll be leaving then.

That is actually pretty ignorant, the AMA is very anti gun.  The doc is trying to get a chance to preach to you that guns are bad and that guns kill little children for fun.  My doc asked me that and I told her it was none of her damn business.  I was also prepared because the NRA warns you about doctors asking those questions.

One of the few correct answers.

When you refuse to answer or choose to provide a provocative/sarcastic response - the Doc can just note in the record that you probably own and possess guns in the home.  Your insurer has access to that data.

Shall I explain further how you guys are potentially hamstringing yourself for the future with smartass answers?

Why don't they ask if you live in a house built prior to 1978? You will find more lead on the walls of an older house than you will in most gunsafes.
