During WWII (the big one), there was born a hero who is exactly what you are envisioning...Captain America!

(All the costumed vigilantes did their part to fight the Axis.  Even Namor turned from hating all surface dwellers to hating just Nazis; but Captain America kind of cornered the market when it came to patriotic names and costuming.)

How about Sgt. Slaughter of wrestling (wrassling) fame? Back in the 80s, didn't he regularly kick the Iron Sheik's ass (even though the Sheik was really from South Boston)?

Are you kidding?  Those guys were the worst shots ever!  Put their laser rifles on "Pulverize" and they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.  But put it on "Stun" and they could should around walls and bypass objetcs. [:D]

Funny you should mention that.  While I was driving to a meeting yesterday, the voice on the radio said that Marvel Comics is doing exactly that -- creating a new "superhero" series with some of their old barely-used characters (read: rejects) going around and fighting terrorism.

I forget what the names and "powers" were, but the radio dude gave three examples.  I think one was some chick who had "magical abilities" but didn't want them.

I presume what you are talking about is a shared-universe roundrobin, like the "Wildcards" series back in the 80's.  Iff I may offer a suggestion, (since I am interested and want to participate)we should create our own characters.  The comic companies jealously guard their franchise characters, as well they should.  Email me and we can discuss this in depth.
