I just remembered a time when my brother pulled up to a stop light and we saw a bumb (whatever you wish to call em) standing on the corner. To my surprise my brother rolls down his window and calls the guy over. With a big grin on this guys face my brother asks, "do you have a dollar I can borrow"? I couldn't help but bust out laughing. This guy then had that WTF look on his face.

What do you do when you when these beggers approach you?

Only if they are 1: Honest (Why lie, I need money for beer) or 2: Creative (Ninjas killed my family, need money for kung fu lessons)

Depends on the person.. Sometimes I do, other times not.. Not sure how I make up my mind.. But some people just look like they need it..

No, I take their money...

+1 on the only if they have creative signs....I.E. One guy outside a bar had a sign that read "Need 20 bucks to get drunk and watch super bowl." If I laugh they usually get a buck...unless they look like meth heads...then they don't......no crack for you!!!

Never.

If you're strong enough to stand around holding a sign, you're strong enough to work, so fuck off.

The evil part of me always wants to keep a big glass of water in the truck so I can toss it onto the ones I see during the winter. I never give in.

I give sometimes. Just depends on the person. A look in their eyes.

I used to worry about them spending it on booze or dope, but I
came to the conclusion long ago, when I give them the money, that's
between me and God, what they do with the money is between them
and God.

Nope.

I figure bad decision making got them where they are so how can I expect they will make good decisions with the money I may give them.

My buddies story: he is retired from the Navy.  A Chief he knew used to go to a off ramp off of I295 with a sign...  Will work for food...or whatever it read.  Anyway, this guy would get up to $700 per hr during rush hr, just standing around askin for money.  Most of the time he didn't get that much but still...  even 3-400 an hr.

He ended up spending some time in the brig for that if I remember the story right...

There's also been quite a few shows...  20/20, dateline and others that have done bits on this.  ALOT of people you see out on the street in tatered cloths and signes live in some very, very nice houses and drive some very, very nice cars.

Personally, I don't give.

I don't disrespect them but I do not give.

Sure their might be A FEW with a valid sob story but I don't give anything for the principal of it all.

How would me giving him some money HELP him other them help him/her continue on the path of fucked upness.

They get nothing from me.  If I wanted to support someone getting drunk all day that someone would be me.

I just flip them off and yell 'vote quimby!' as I drive away.

I am not rude to them, but I do not give them a dime.  It will only encourage them to remain bums.

THere's a woman near my office who has been holding a sign that says PREGNANT and HOMELESS.  Yeah, right.

If it's an individual asking for something, I help out. If it's the fireman's annual boot drive, I help out. If it's the Nation of Islam... I don't. If it's one of those "organizations" with the blazing orange vests on, I don't.

If I see somebody in a wheelchair or missing a limb, I usually give a little more.

thanks,
Ron

I have taken men and women that I've seen digging through dumpsters for food, to a nearby restaurant, and bought them the special....what ever it may have been, it's better than dumpster food........The people who hang out at the fast food joint, or on the freeway exit ramp, get NOTHING....I never reach into my pocket for anything when I have just cashed a check, or left a job after the customer has paid me......That's how you get  jacked....the people who run their mouth when I refuse to give them money, I usually open my jacket to show them a very good reason to walk  on........we've had people MURDERED by homeless folks here in Cleveland........

I give to the local open door mission homes.   There a person can get a hot meal, shower, a bed to sleep on and most importantly......some scripture.  For most of these people it won't make any difference.  But if my donations lead just one person to God and helps them turn their life around....it's certainly worth it.
But to give on the street is a bad idea.  That money will more than likely be wasted on drugs & alcohol.

Last time a guy asked me, I told him I had no money, but offered him my lucky sea-shell that I had found on the beach in Florida the week before.  He didn't want it.

No reason to be rude, but I also don't want to give away something to someone who might be lying, when there are PLENTY of charities that I can give to where I know the money is being used for good.

Plus, their income is tax free.

I remember a local story in the news (think it was local) about a beggar.  Every couple of months he'd call the local casino and get picked up by a limo and stay in facny room while spending tens of thousands of dollars that he got from begging.  When he was out of money (after about a week), he go back to begging on the corner.

No, not anymore...but, I have before and will again do this:

You can tell if someone begging is for real or not by offering to buy them lunch instead of giving them money.  A genuinely hard-up individual will NEVER turn down free food.

BTW, do you guys have the Nation of Islam standing on street corners in your city? These guys are the MOST rude people in the world.. AND they want you to give them money. I told this one guy that I give to my Church and he said that he goes to my Church because ALL churches are the same. I then asked him if he goes St. Viators. He responded that as a Christian, I should help my fellow brother. I usually (NEVER) get in conversations with people standing on a median but then told him that I will help a fellow Christian whenever possible, but that he wasn't Christian and that I lived in Oakland during college and my color wasn't exactly one that Nation of Islam cared for. He looked at me with a smirk and walked away

thanks,
Ron
