I want to paint the chromed plastic grill on my car black. Can i sand blast off the chromel or is there an easier way to get it off?
Any tips/hints would help.
Thanx in advance.

Your best bet is to etch it and paint it rather than try to remove the crome completly.

What is this etching of which you speak?

Go over it with the sandblaster without actually removing the chrome. It gives the paint something to stick to.

edit: You could remove it all but you run the risk of cutting too deep into the plastic, and that may show through the paint.

Car model guys soak parts in Castrol Super Clean to get the plating off.

Is that some kind of parts cleaner?  I'm wondering if it would be absorbed into the plastic and leech out later.

I've never heard of them having problems with it. I think you're fine if you wash the parts off thoroughly afterward.

I've heard that Easy Off oven cleaner works well too.

Yes, Easy Off reacts with the aluminum plating on the "chromed" plastic.

But check this out!

Easy-Off Oven Cleaner will remove most model paint, I used it to strip old HO rail cars before repainting.  You need to rinse REALLY well afterward.  Gloves are also a must.

I use Clorox to get chrome off of model car parts.
