Seems they're cropping up on both coasts

England, anyone?

They're apparently hated. Those and the Altimas the NYPD gets. My brother was telling me they beat the shit out of them when they get assigned them because they're beyond uncomfortable.
Link Posted: 4/30/2011 11:05:31 PM EDT
won't find them down here. We like our V8s.

Link Posted: 4/30/2011 11:08:11 PM EDT
If I ever allow myself to be pulled over by a prius I'll quite driving.  Period.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SHIT?

GOD DAMN.

Link Posted: 4/30/2011 11:58:01 PM EDT
I heard the cops using them are happy because if they get into a firefight they can flip the car on its side and use it as cover.

I blame Obama!

It still has a radio.

The NYPD Prius in the OP is not a police car.

It saves the taxpayers money.

Cops patrolling in heavy city traffic don't need a V8.

Personally, I don't want a hybrid, but for all the slow speed patrolling, etc, I bet those work just fine.

Now, a cop in a more rural setting needs something with some get up and go, but for a big city, not so much.

This. Meter maid car.
We just got a Ford Focus hybrid at the precinct. It sucks worse than the Impalas.

I can see using them in big cities where traffic congestion is the norm but not so much in rural areas.

someone mentioned lack of comfort if that is true then the Prius should not be an option, LEOs spend long hours in their patrol cars comfort should be priority one IMO.
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 5:16:47 AM EDT
Our meter maids in Chattanooga drive those. It's a small step up from the Cushman scooters they used to have.

Double fail.

Quite != Quiet

One step closer to living out Red Barchetta.

Actually, he meant "quit".

I notice neither of those vehicles are labeled "Interceptor."

I agree with this.

About the same time that VW announced a new plant in TN, the THP started buying some VW patrol cars.
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 5:59:49 AM EDT
paint it black and you can sneak up on people better.

i have thought it would be a good idea in certain areas/times

This is true. I've seen one at the Brownsville chicken coop quite often.

Can't be any worse than this!

Needs something to balance out the ghey found in the Prius and Smart Car

My personal favorite, even more so than the 2011 Charger

Link Posted: 5/1/2011 6:19:58 AM EDT
Neither of those are patrol units. For patrol, it would be a pathetic excuse for a car.

Now the crime scene unit? Seems like it would be pretty pathetic there, too. The crime scene guys I know have Suburbans or full-size trucks and getting everything that they use for scenes into those things is still a bit of trickery.
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 6:21:10 AM EDT
In both cases presented, it gives the agency a chance to "green" a portion of the fleet without affecting the patrol division.

Unfortunately we are looking at greening the patrol divisions fleet by going to propane. I am not a fan of the concept.

THe first one, I can understand; Berkley is a cesspool of politically correct, tree-hugging, hippie Communists.

The scond one is NYPD Traffic enforcement - overglorified "Meter Maids", so I guess i can understand as well, since it seems, they got rid of their little funky looking trikes and got something with 4 wheels and a more comfortable seat.

Meh! Give me my Hemi powered Charger and we are good to go...

He said QUITE, not QUIET.

I think he meant QUIT, but in reality he'll quite driving.

I know. He misspelled and the next guy didn't know the difference between quiet and quite. Hence...double fail!

Resisting arrest is in your future then.
I'm sure even patrol fleet cars are going green in the near future.

We have hybrid ford escapes for peremeter patrol vehicles. They are biggest peices of shit ever. Everyone hates em the break left and fuckin right. The brass has decided to replace them, with MORE escape hyrbids. Ugh
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 7:16:36 AM EDT
Whats the big deal? Oh, I see they're Prius's.

The city I live in uses hybrids for the building department and other non-emergency functions. Makes sense to me, they are just putting around town. Its not like they need a 400hp Crown Vic for building inspections.
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 7:19:04 AM EDT

what does that thing run on, strawberry douche!?
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 7:37:02 AM EDT
Doesn't NYPD use horses?  (never been there, just heard about them)

If so I wonder what's more efficient?
Cost of hybrid + fuel + maintainence
Cost of horse + feed + vet bills
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 7:41:59 AM EDT
The Prius is good for some things....... we even tried a SMART car for admin stuff. It sucked.

I could see some guys picking up a smart car and taking off with it in the back of a 350 or a small trailer for shits and giggles around here.

First thing I thought of when I heard Prius cop car was someone with a mini monster truck would just use it as a speed bump.
Link Posted: 5/1/2011 7:56:39 AM EDT
As long as they match the driving environment and aren't union made I'm all for it.

My understanding is that they use horses to give them better visibility. Sitting on horseback they can see over crowds. And I'd imagine it's easier to move through a crowd on a big animal.

Yep... its a Texas Sheriffs Office patrol car... I did confirm that this car is a hunk of trash for patrol and so they wont be buying any more.

I've seen an unmarked police Escape Hybrid down here. It belongs to a police department in a city with a lot of rich residents, so the Escape isn't chasing down gangbangers and murderers. Looked to me like it was mostly a traffic unit.
