A local incident hit pretty close to home.  My wife and I have discussed it at length.

Or better yet, tell them not to drive off a boat ramp.

Weather and being unfamiliar with the area were factors in this case.  The boat landing isn't very well marked either.

I am pretty sure they panicked and made very little effort to escape once they started sinking.

One of them was on the phone with 9-1-1 when they went under.

That's what I was thinking.  Didn't they see the water covering the "road"?

Calling 911 fine...but you really think rescue will be there before you go all the way down in the drink? What were they thinking....

If your family is as dumb as those two, there's nothing you can do to prevent their early demise.

talkin on the phone when they should have been swimmin, seems like they would have had time to roll down a window or open a door as far as they floated.

Thanks for your input.  I did a search, and actually looked through GD, and didn't find either thread.

I should not be telling anyone anything about water, since I was always the first one out on the lake for Ice Fishing in my f-250, right around 8 inches I would be out on it when most would wait for 12.

The fog in Maine can roll in off the ocean and cover the coast as thick as cotton candy.

When I was younger and living in Maine, my roommates and I were playing Ultimate Frisbee with some other people in a public park when just before dusk, the fog just rolled in through the trees.

In a matter of moments, you couldn't even see your feet on the ground, much less throw and catch a frisbee.

If you haven't experienced it, you have no idea.

I imagine they tried to open the doors and couldn't. The water pressure quickly builds to the point that even a strong man isn't going to budge it, let alone a pregnant woman awkwardly fumbling at it in a panic. Like the OP says, neither of them had a plan. They'd probably never considered the possibility and how to respond. Judging by some of the responses, I imagine neither have many of you.  I just feel bad for the dog.

Oh make that 2 things...

I cant believe you can get cell reception underwater in an upside down vehicle.  Technology is truly amazing.

The same thing most of society thinks: 911 and the government will always be there to save you.

Joe Biden told me. Must be true.

I've always heard wait for car to fill up - once pressure is equalized you can open the doors - right?

So you got a few seconds to get unbuckled and situated for occupants to make their move at the right time.

Can someone confirm - ive never had the chance to try this and Id rather avoid it if possible.

My understanding is similar.  Get yourself situated so you're ready to exit once the pressure normalizes, be ready to hold your breath, then break a window.  Once the water rushing in equalizes the pressure, you should be able to exit and swim up for air without too much difficulty.  The challenge is mental:  Not panicking while the water comes rushing in.  Panicking is often what would kill you.

When Mythbusters did the massive tests on how to escape they tried the equalization theory. Surprisingly, it didn't work immediately. They found it took almost a full minute to be able to open the door. They couldn't explain it, but it happened consistently.

They found the best way is to get the windows down asap, and crawl out before the water came in, or let the car submerge and get out the window.

I keep a sharpened center punch in the drivers door compartment of all my cars.  It sounds stupid, but there is a water filled canal along nearly every Florida road.

I put a car in one when I was a kid.  Fortunately it was only deep enough to ruin the car not submerge it.

Nope, get out as soon as possible, not many people can hold their breath long enough for that scenario to work.

For example:
