They stop beeping when you rip it down and throw it across the room in a fit of rage.

Mine are hardwired. Backup batt has never shown a need for replacement. The alarm itself say's it should be replaced every ten years.

If they are standard batteries in your detectors the reccomendation is to change them when you change your clocks.

Been there, done that. It's a mother when you've got three alarms beeping and only two spare 9 volts.... My experience was 2am on Sat morning after getting back from a week long busines trip.
