Why shoot a plate with a round that you already know won't penetrate? Seems like a waste of a $5 round.

I've seen that round and I was hoping someone would test it in ballistics gel. But no one has as of yet.

Armor piercing ammunition is defined as projectiles made using certain materials, such as steel, brass, tungsten, etc. This projectile appears to be copper, which is not among the verboten materials. They are designed to stop AP 7.62x39 and I believe even non tungsten core AP 7.62x54r when backed with IIIA soft armor. (The exact projo and velocity are not public info AFAIK). They are/were SOCOM's standard issue plate (those appear to be an older first or second gen). They are not going to be penetrated by a little steel core 5.7 round. OP frankly this was a bit of a waste of a test. There was never any doubt that those plates would stop that round. |

A solid copper bullet with no zinc content (and thus not brass) cannot legally be armor peircing ammunition. Further, what you shoot armor piercing ammunition out of is irrelevant. Armor piercing ammunition is no different legally even if you don't own a pistol that could shoot it. It's still armor piercing ammunition. There are some State laws on that matter, but Federally, it doesn't matter. Here's the checklist for what is armor peircing ammunition: Is it suited for use in a commercially available pistol (at all comercially available, anywhere in the US)? Is it made entirely of or with a core using one of the forbidden materials listed in the law? Mainly Steel, Brass, Bronze, Tungsten? If the answer to both is yes, it is AP, unless specifically exempted for environmental reason or the AG just wants to. Another way it can be AP: Is it suited for use in a commercially available pistol (at all comercially available, anywhere in the US)? Is it larger in diameter than .22? Is the jacket more than 25% of the total projectile weight? If yes to all three, it is AP. If a projectile is not AP under the two sets of conditions above, it is not AP. Copper is fine to use. It sure looks like this thing is copper. If it is, then that projectile is not AP. |
