It doesn't really change the story, but someone's prone to exageration! I've stared in the face of 10 foot breaking surf off Maui, and it looks like 25 simply due to perspective and fear. I doubt there's a Yacht in existance that can produce a 10 foot high wake. The displacement required for that amount of energy is just too big. I'd place it at 4-5'.

Gee, so I've NEVER seen a 10ft wake from somebody's waterski's? Let's see he was 6ft 6in tall, that water was at least 4 feet over his head. Well I guess you're right, that would equal 4 or 5 feet. I'm sooooo bad at math.

I think 4-5 feet is still too big. To create a wake that big it must have been the Titanic going 50 knots right by them.

10 foot wave by a yacht? [BS2]
Link Posted: 11/26/2003 12:23:19 PM EST
I agree with the 10ft. wake. Just not going to happen. If a boat was big enough to create that, it sill wouldn't be able to go the speed required to create that wake.

Ditto on the wake. They, likely took a roll from the side and it seemed huge. Or, they did the right thing and drove into the wake. When the bow took the dip and plowed into the following wave, the wave looked huge. Needless to say, the boat took a big enough roll or wave to wash out a dog. The owner of the yacht is an ass. Big surprise. This dog is a bad ass. They should try and breed him to death...he's got good DNA. -HS

Maybe it was the nuclear powered carrier USS Yacht that generated the wake. [:D]

She ate the cabin boy. Classic washed overboard tale.

Maybe it's an aircraft carrier that sped by at 70 knots and caused the 10-foot wave [>:/]

[BS] http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_full_detail.jsp?slim=quick&boat_id=1081207&units=Feet¤cy=USD&access=Public&listing_id=20864&url= This is a 162' Benetti Yacht, it is capable of a top speed of 23 knots. It can and will create a 10' wave. Note that the writer said WAVE and not WAKE, big difference. I am constantly jetskiing in the Cheseapeake Bay all summer long and there are some BIG ships that sail these waters. I jump 4'-5' waves and wakes all the time, they are being created by boats 30' long. A big yacht like the one pictured above will make a 10' wave with ease.
