A bar I used to frequent in Germany was owned by a Greek.
He would come back with the good stuff after visits to family. Greek restaurants would give you a shot while you waited for food. |
I used to drink that with my cousin. It is pretty unique in its flavor. |
The owner of the Greek pizza place down the street from me used to pour a shot for me while I waited for my pizza. All the pizza places up here are owned by Greeks, it seems like.

View Quote That shit is cheap shwill IMHO . Try the Turkish RAKKI its much smother . Also if you want the same flavor but slightly sweeter try a bottle of French PERNOD about 50 bucks a bottle wherever you can find it. And remember these PASTIS style drinks are NOT made to be drunken straight. They are to be mixed with ice cold water to form what's called a louche . Its the greatest thing with mezza tapas or grilled meats . I literally grew up drinking this stuff . I an Armenian and you will find that most Mediterranean cultures have this type of liquor made from grapes and anise seeds some times with fennel as well . |

Oh I forgot to mention the typical ratio is 3/1 water to PASTIS . You can change that to be stronger or lighter depending on your taste . I prefer a 4/1 ratio .
Its also important to remember the addition of ice cold water really does mellow out the flavor profile. If you go to Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, France, Italy, etc. you will find almost never is this type of drink drunk straight. |

I'll drink this. You can get your Ottoman on if you want. you did read the part where I told you I was Armenian right? and I'm sure you realize a history between Armenians and Turks right? just remember in the Ottoman Empire the Armenians were the ones that brewed the best rakki !!! but even after all the bad blood and history my grandparents and great-grandparents always drink the Turkish varieties they would say it was much smoother and of much better quality and that the Greek varieties were more like moonshine very rough. Stopped at a little Greek shop for lunch last month. Asked the owner what full-blood Greeks thought of Ouzo, being one himself. His answer? "No! Terrible! We prefer whiskey."
Hey OP one more thing I can suggest for you
When I was growing up in Detroit we had a very large population of Greek and Macedonian immigrants in Detroit Dearborn area. My family was very good friends with one family of Greek extraction that made their own homemade ouzo . When they would grill kabobs instead of using water they would mix it with sprite or 7up soda. I actually just had some of that two days ago and let me tell you it's not bad at all!!! just a suggestion for you! |

Ugh.
It's like Greek sex in a bottle. Ya try it once, but then warn your friends not to.
My gun dealer is Greek. He has brought some back when he visits. I'll drink it.
Killed the bottle. I think I might have a problem...
I'm outta booze. |
Ouzo make you craaaaaazy!!!
Brought a bottle of it to a party once. Buddy was taking pulls straight out of the bottle. I figured he knew what he was doing. He didn't. Didn't realize it was 90 proof. Much craziness ensued.

And their food is Fuck, now I'm hungry. |

I'm not a fan of anise, I've found. I'll take some Bulgarian rakia any day though...

I didn't like it at all. Bro's wife is Bulgarian. Her sister is dating a Turk. We had Turkish night and the food was awesome, the raki, not so much. We had Greek and Bulgarian nights as well and I'm just not a fan.

Fucking Greeks!
I went to a Greek christening of my neighbors. His entire family flew in from South Africa and Crete, it felt like every 15 seconds someone put that demon water in my hands and said oompa! |
That stuff is not for me.
Years back I was gifted 3 bottles of the stuff by some of my Greek customers... It took me a while to find someone who would appreciate it and when I did, he wound up with them all |
A goofy greek co-worker needed a ride to work one day...
So in picking him up he had some from "back home" and mixed it with water for me to try out. I thought it strange that clear & clear make white when mixed, but what the heck, I downed it as he gave me a refill. And I swear he kept his most beautiful wife locked in the apartment all the time...can't blame him for that I guess. I did have a serious buzz like no other for quite some time. |
That's what my dad drinks when he orders a shot and a beer. It's good I've drank a lot of it. It's also tasty when kept cold in the freezer.
