<X_Xxxxx> I always thought the gas escaped through the key carrier into the gas tube and exited out the gas hole in the FSB.

Whew. That IS pretty clueless about how ARs operate, but I don't think he needs public embarassment.

i tried to explain how gas operated guns worked ( i was descibing specfically the AR) and i was asked:

"gas, talking about like the gas you use in cars?"

This has to do with the AR design crapping where it eats, thus jamming and why they do not run dirty(Wolf)?  Not sure I follow?

No. This has to do with him thinking that the gas runs the opposite direction from the way it actually does.

yeah, the gas is stored in the buttstock. that's what that metal lid is for in the butt; it's a gas cap. lift the gas cap up, insert the nozzle, then fill 'er up!

I was going to make fun, then I asked my wife what she would think if she heard of a gas operated rifle, and she said "dangerous"

She shoots and has fired semi autos of recoil and gas operated variety.......

I think it was Steyr who sold an AR to some guy who went home and read the manual. Then he comes back pissed that he sold him a gas operated rifle and didnt sell him any gas for it!

Who was it?

Ok, ok. The culprit is none other than J_Smith, our resident T.U.N.A. who has been enlightened. He is smarter that he looks, I simply took advantage of his confession to have some fun at his expense. I suppose I should feel bad, but I seem to big having difficulty getting in touch with my feelings...

C'mon.  I used to be an armorer for the Air Force.

The hammers fall and hit the needles which ignite the cap connected to the flashpan.  That sends a spark thru the touchhole in the breech plate and fires the round.  Then the gas is vented thru the blowhole which causes the barrel assembly to recoil approximately 3 inches against the pressure of the hydraulic cylinder.  The barrel assembly's recoil causes the flint to hit the spark plate, relighting the punk for the next round.  When the cylinder's fully compressed, the lifter arm ejects the spent casing and propellant bags and engages the pump switch, allowing the bolt to come back into battery and ramming home the next shell.

Duh.

***Public Service Announcement***

When the round is fired the gas follows the bullet down the barrel where some of it is tapped into a tube that runs back down to the chamber where it hits the gas key in the bolt carrier driving the bolt back to the rear, in this process the extractor on the bolt head extracts the empty cartridge, the bolt hits the hammer which is pushed down and recocked, the bolt and carrier hit the recoil buffer in the butt stock and spring forward thus stripping a fresh cartridge out of the magazine and loading it into the chamber. In this all processes have been completed and the weapon is once again ready to fire.
