2wP and my son is in NICU, born 5 weeks premature by emergency c-section. He is stable but could use some positive vibes sent his way if anyone could spare them.
He's got his daddy's eyes.

NICU people are the best - I work with them everyday. I've seen some miracles happen up there, so you are in good hands.

What's his name?

Prayers sent. 5 weeks premature is really not too bad. We ussually call them growers and feeders. % week premature ussually pulls thru perfectly fine. Is he on a Ventilator?

As one who just brought my newborn son home yesterday, I wish your's the best....
Link Posted: 3/14/2006 6:48:02 PM EST
He is doing well - he definitely is not in bad shape for a preemie. 35 weeks isn't all that premature so I was surprised when we were told he was going to NICU and staying there. He is not on a ventilator which was my biggest worry. His main issue is feeding which I am told a huge % of preemies have... he is on his third day and has just decided he might give this eating thing a try. He kept down 10 cc's today (two 5 cc feedings). The NICU nurse says if he were "normal" he would be eating 36 cc's every 3 hours but I just don't see how something that small could possibly eat that much. Maybe I heard her wrong??
his name is Samuel Lee.

Thanks for the P&PT!

Thanks for the update.

My son spent his first night in the NICU due to a fever at birth. That was over 12 years ago

It sounds like Sam Lee is doing OK!

Good luck, glad to hear he's doing well.

My daughter was born at 27 weeks, spent 2 months in NICU so I know what you're going through.

My kiddo came out fine, no real problems. She's 9 now, happy and healthy, almost as tall as her mother and just as pretty.

10 years ago next Month I had one born at 2 pounds 11 ounces, my wedding ring fit around his foot! Today I can't keep up with him, and he shoots better than his old man! Just keep your head up, there will be tough times ahead, but the little guy will make it just fine. Good luck, you're in our prayers.

My daughter was born last February 15th via emergency C-section (my wife had a bout with toxemia). My child was born 7 weeks premature at 3 lbs. 2 ounces.

It's amazing what our hospitals and doctors are capable of. Now, she's happy & healthy and just over a year old. Things are tough now but don't worry, your son will be fine. The NICU is an amazing place - full of emotion, hope, and competent people.

He'll be fine.

My prayers and thoughts are with you. the feeding tube is no big deal, when they are that young they will loose weight just from the effort of sucking. My oldest was born 4 weeks premature and she is now very healthy 9 year old. IN our case my wife had not shown any problems other than feeling very bad, since this was our first we took the dr.s word that this was normal. 2 weeks after nicole was born Mom was back in the hospital for an abcess that had eaten up a third of her liver. She's great now and we can chalk it up to one of life's lessons now.

Update - he is doing well. Progressing. He couldn't tolerate normal feedings so they switched him to a hypoallergenic formula. Looks like he has the same milk protein allergy as his older sister and brother (which I told the dr's about from day 1 but hey, what do we non-md's know?) So it started off slowly with him vomitting up most feedings. he is tube fed 50% of his feedings at this point. No more vomitting but yesterday he decided to take a break from the whole feeding thing which was disappointing. There was some hope he would come home the end of this week but he decided he enjoyed the personal attention of nurses and billy lights too much to come home. Its just a waiting game at this point....when he is ready he will eat again.
Thank you for your prayers. They are much appreciated. I can't wait to get him home. Heck I can't wait to hold him without wires and tubes and alarms going off. Anyone that has had a NICU baby knows the alarms I am talking about. Funny how we get used to ignoring them after awhile.
