We just went over $18 trillion in National Debt, our current GDP is around $16.7 trillion:

Debt vs GDP for the last few decades:

Short of a total economic reset we are never going to recover.

Don't worry about it-the Republicans control the House.

No way they will vote to raise the debt "ceiling" again this year. The party of fiscal responsibility will be kicking some ass any day now........

If only we could go back to those heady, pre-obama days when the government was fiscally responsible.

There won't be any reset. Certain countries will, however, experience a lower standard of living, as has happened in Greece.

I'm not really sure the debt-to-GDP ratio is as important of a metric as what proportion of our GDP it takes to service that debt. I still think we're way too much in debt, don't get me wrong - I just don't think this is a significant milestone. I think we passed a lot of those a long while back.

Only under Bush. Under bush, debt was bad. Under Obama, debt is good. I have been assured by some "educated" liberals that is the case

Remember the debt counter that used to run on the news every day?

Eventually there will be. It's inevitable, just based on human history.

Eventually could mean in a thousand years, though.

In the very near future we will be spending more on interest payments than in defense.

https://www.cbo.gov/publication/45684

We spent $520 billion on defense in 2014, we spent around $230 billion on interest payments.

Each administration outdoes the previous in expanding the gov and increasing spending.

I honestly don't think Romney would have been much different, just the players bitching vs defending would be swapped.

Like Senator Obama bitching about raising the debt "ceiling" under Bush, then the republicans bitching about raising it under Obama.

A real nail biter as to the outcome.................

Don't say $18T or $18 trillion. Write it out with zeros when you write about the debt.

$18,000,000,000,000.

It doesn't really matter it seems.  We have always been in debt up to our eyeballs. Never going to change.

Besides, if we decide not to pay, it's not like they can repo anything.

I hope they double spending next year to 36 trillion and triple it the year after.
I'm tired on being one of the few left that gives a shit.
With the new GOP congress now rubber stamping spending I give up.
Fuck it, I want them to increase spending, give limos and mansions to welfare moms and illegals and give for full college tuition to everyone in China.
I just read on Drudge that 6.5 million people have active social security numbers over the age of 112 years old. I'm sure they are all voting with those dead peoples ID's too.
The quicker we let them spend themselves into a collapse the better. I hope it comes soon and is a very hard crash.
