FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A Fayetteville police officer broke his leg early Friday during a scuffle with a suspect in a hit-and-run accident, authorities said.

Officer G. Blanco witnessed the 2:30 a.m. accident on Raeford Road and followed the vehicle to the rear of a nearby business, where a state trooper and other officers arrived for assistance, Sgt. Wayne Burgess of the Fayetteville Police Department said.

Officers were placing the driver of the car into a police cruiser when she began to kick them and tried to bite them, Burgess said. A passenger in the suspect vehicle began to fight with Blanco and the trooper, and Blanco sustained a broken leg as the suspect was wrestled to the ground, Burgess said.

Ivette Ramos, of the 300 block of Castle Road in Fayetteville, was charged with driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle without a license and hit and run in the incident.

Javier Diaz, of the same address, was charged with assaulting a government official.
