Gun program arms citizens
with the best weapon

The removal of guns from this city's streets is basic to achieving a civilized level of order and a feeling of safety, which is the job of the New York Police Department and the city administration and any gathering of do-gooders focused on the lowering of the murder rate.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says that Operation Gun Stop is a necessary program because it creates incentive and guarantees the protection of those citizens who want to report the sale of or possession of illegal firearms.

"The best police work frequently results from the alliance of the community and law enforcement," Kelly says, "which is why we are offering $1,000 to each person who contacts us with information that leads to an arrest and a conviction."

Operation Gun Stop is funded by the NYPD and information can be supplied anonymously by dialing the toll-free number, 866-GUN STOP. Rewards are paid within 72 hours of the arrest of one or more suspects. In 2006, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 10, Operation Gun Stop received 701 tips, made 549 arrests, seized 293 guns, and paid $189,000 in rewards. Not bad.

But why is anonymity important? "Our job is to protect the community as much as it is to bring in criminals who threaten lives in the community," says Kelly.

Kelly went on to explain something we all should know: "These are not toy criminals and they are not toy guns. If someone notifies us about a member of a drug crew who is known to possess illegal firearms, under no circumstances do we want that person's name available to the criminal. If even WE don't know who the person is, he is that much safer. Otherwise, the arrest of a suspect could lead to grim results."

I think this is the kind of a program that should provide a national model for addressing a far from insignificant problem. It also allows those who are tired of the conditions created by the lawless to strike back at them.

Without guns, many deaths would have been avoided because the murderers are not people hypnotized by the possibility of bringing guns to equal the odds; they bring guns to have an advantage.

As neighborhood people, both young and old, begin to help law enforcement remove the instruments of degradation that dog the community, we can all breathe easier. I say that because when a gun has been confiscated we know it will not be an instrument of terror or murder.

So that's how it happens? We create senseless laws where there should be none, infringe individual liberty, then sell out our neighbors for 1000 bucks a pop?

Damn. I thought there'd be a lot more blood, satan-worship, violence, and hedonism.

I'll be the first in line to turn in a ganger illegally possessing a firearm, just like I'll turn in a crack dealer. We have enough opposition, and the more illegal possessors that are arrested the more we look like the honest, responsible gun owners we are.

HOWEVER!

This is nothing but feel good administration that opens the door to a very slippery slope. Out of all those arrests the article boasts as statistical victories and proof the program is a success, how many LEGAL gun owners were harrassed and put through the wringer because little old liberal lady down the block called in a false tip? I see this as nothing more than underhanded BS designed to pave the way to more regulations and more harrassment for the legal owners out there.

They published the number. Is it illegal to call them just to waste their time?

This is exactly how it happens, my young friend. It is politiking at its finest and, as such, most devious. A bill to simply "ban all guns" isn't going to go anwhere, so they dream up these ridiculous and deviant plans that are nothing but the pavers to the patio of outright 2A abolishment - the end goal of most liberals, and this asshat's ploy to sucker in more votes next election through the fallacy he has somehow made the city safer.

It's not just personal agenda - it's political agenda. And the media strums it like a fine tuned guitar in front of a bewildered audience too stoned on their own ignorance to research anything themselves.

You're young, so there is still hope for you. Too many of your constituents, however, falsely believe such programs as this are designed for their safety and happiness. Glad to see such a smart young man as yourself read between the lines and interpret the true intention of such "feel good" programs.

The more calls they receive the more publicity they'll receive. There is no way in hell they'll publish the statistics honestly.

Next report will read something like this: "The program received over 250,000 anonymous tips last year." It won't go any further, except to show the 6 figures erronesly as a story of the program's success.

It should read: "The program received over 250,000 anonymous tips last year, but with only 250 arrests made it is obvious the city is wasting resources that would capture more illegal guns by making a higher budget for the gang units of NYC and aggressively prosecuting know gang members."

A slew of calls will only be reported as success, as that's the spin the media wants, regardless if it reflects truth or not.

Do we need the US to get invaded before they realize that guns are for our protection, both from invaders as well as a tyrant gov?
