The question is, when do you do it?

I don't do it much...  actually, the only times I do (lately) it is when I go to a Board of Supervisors meeting or other local government meeting and I only do that because I can.

When else do you do it?

Not nearly enough. The advantage of a carried firearm should partially be the surprise when it is presented. ("Hey! That ain't his walle-"  BANG!)

We are forbidden from open carry unless we are in uniform (basically if our citizens can't open carry, we won't do it either). Mine only comes out when it it time to be mean to someone.

Isn't there some level of deterence gained by open carry?

The only time I ever open carry is at the range. With a CCW I have no reason to show the gun even though it is legal to do so in my state. Why upset the little old ladies?

Since I'm in Nova and work in DC, I don't.  But a buddy down in the Richmond area open carries all the time.  Home, work, shopping etc.

There is also a level of deterence when they have NO idea who is packing. Plus, I personally feel that open carry can induce a "pre-emptive" strike to the back of the head.....

Believe it or not, open carry is legal here in Ma. If you try it, though, you will probably get nabbed for disturbing the peace, because so many folks will freak out. I see it every so often, but it is pretty rare to see anyone carrying openly; it just isn't worth the hassle.

Like others have said, you lose the element of surprize, which is just about the only advantage you have if someone messes with you. I do open carry at the range and at my gun club, though.

If I have to go to the great city of Phoenix I will usually wear a T-shirt, jeans and my G19 in a Fobus. That plus a bald head usually gives me a wide berth. [:D]

Every time I see you post - I think of that Motorola commercial - Hell-ooo, Mo-to...

Heh. Don't know that one. I'll let you in on a little secret. EMOTO stands or Eventual Master of the Obvious... meaning that I figure it out... eventually.

I agree. You don't want to be standing at a urinal with a pistol on your hip. Those things are too easy to sell on the street corner.

That's why you clear the urinal by loudly stating "Nice dick" as you enter. Anyone who stays after that is not too likely to be interested in what you have hanging from your belt... [;)]

What part of VA are you in?

Anyway, I'm pretty much the same.  Meetings, occasionally restaraunts (after said meetings), and to the range.  A lot of times, people don't even notice.

Holy shit, that's funny!!

But seriously, you shouldn't use urinals anyway.  You have your back to the rest of the room, a hard surface in front of you, and your dick in hand.  Not safe.  Some people on protection details have been fired simply for using a urinal.

Yep.
And I think pkennedy lives out in the Front Royal area.  Rural enough I don't think people are afraid of guns.
