"In memory of all the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs buried in this cemetary."

Well, I have a fairly good idea what is meant by "Odd Fellows," but I've never heard of a "Rebekah."

Since I'm thinking "Odd Fellows" refers to homosexual men, a "Rebekah" must've been how society described lesbians back in the day. There is no date on the plaque.

Anyone know the origins of the term "Rebekah?"

The "Odd Fellows" are a secret society kind of like the Masons.

Rebekah's are the female side of their org.

No homos here.

"Independant order of the Odd Fellows" I.O.O.F. for short, they actually started a lot of Cemetaries around my area, they were like the ELKS, MOOSE, and MASONS a private club that did civic activities. The "Rebekahs" were the female contingent!!

THEY WERE NOT GAY GROUPS, GET A LIFE, DO SOME RESEARCH!!

Take it easy on the guy! I'm thinking maybe that in this case rigorous exercise is a great way to suppress certain impulses - obviously some slip out every now and again - but thank God for Arfcom.

The term "Odd fellow" has LONG been used to refer to fags. So I can see how he mis-understood.

What are you doing hanging around cemetaries, looking for signs of gayness anyway?

Kind of funny when you think about it.

Anybody remember "The Odd Couple"?

From the link above:

Man in his pride and vigor, when health, like a strong arm circles him about, enabling him to battle alone against the storms of life, may refuse to acknowledge and recognize the true worth of woman but when sickness lays its prostrating hand upon him and strength departs, leaving the boasted giant helpless. When adversity, like a cloud of darkness encompasses him about, when friends who once sang his praises and fattened upon his plenty, turn coldly away and desert him in his need. When life is slowly fading, Rebekah assumes her station.

Quoted for posterity. The semi-secret societies are no doubt coming after you now.

At least you didn't insult the Woodsmen. They have axes.
