On another forum, they have buttons so you can rate the member; there are [applaud] and [smite] buttons, so you can express how you feel about another member. These votes are cumulative and appear below the member's screen name.

Good idea, or childish?

Stupid

If a person has a grudge about another person because maybe of their view on religion(for example), its going to be biased.

This site shouldn't be a popularity contest.

I've seen something like it -- just a simple Up the Person's Rating system -- and it just doesn't get much more pointless.

Bad idea.... even on here, I can think a person is an ass in one thread, and the funniest guy on the interweb on the next

Yep.
Incredibly stupid idea, IMO.

A Muslim site a few of us infiltrated had such a system.  You could increase your "power" and your "rep".

It was totally gay.

Those topics are usually balanced enough for it not to be a problem...

Now, if we made it 'Troll' and 'Not A Troll'...

'Implement-of-War, your troll-o-meter score is a -1000. Goodbye!'

I'd be screwed.

I'd say good idea for technical forums, but in subjective ones, all it promotes is herd mentality.

On a smaller forum I moderate, it works well, as very few (if any) of the members put much weight into the karma system.

It is a streamlined way of saying nice, funny, good post.  Or, just the opposite.

On a larger forum, it would be a clusterfuck.

What sucks is People will form opinions of people just because they may have a Negative Rating. It's not that great of an Idea. They do it in the Sniper's Hide too and people get all pissed off about their rating going down.

I would only give the people who posted in this thread negatives!
