I've recently move to Oklahoma City, where are the best gun stores and ranges?  Thanks! [:)]

The best aren't that good, but here's what I can offer:

-Gene Sears Supply Company El Reno
A wholesaler that also offers walk in sales. They handle Winchester, Browning, Perazzi, Krieghoff, Sako, Weatherby, and Remington guns and MEC, Winchester, Vihtavouri, Hodgdon reloading and Leupold as well as the junk scopes (trashco, simmons, etc.). Their telephone number is 262-2647. The easiest way to give their address is to just tell you how to get there. Exit U.S. 81 from I-40 and go north across U.S. 66. At the 81/66 intersection there's a "Love's." Just immediately north of the intersection is a brick ranch style home on the east side of the road bounded by a chain link fence on its north separating it from some apartments. There'll be a dirt driveway on the south side of the fence. Turn in the driveway and you'll see a warehouse with the "Gene Sears Supply" name on a sign. That's it. They're open M-F 8:30 to 5:30.

-Outdoor America Store (formerly Fred Baker Firearms) 1925 N. Macarthur Boulevard (west side of the road between N.W. 10th and N.W. 23rd). Probably my least favorite of all OKC area gun stores. Good selection, high prices, and high pressure sales. Never bought anything there and probably never will. Lots of guns though.

-Southwest Shooters Supply 1940 Linwood Avenue. Once OKC's premier gun shop, now pretty sad. Still lots of guns and frequent discounts for cash purchases (usually 10%). Best way to get to these guys since they're not on a main thoroughfare is to exit I-40 at Penn and go north to Main. Turn back east and go to Virginia and turn back north. They're on the southeast corner of Linwood and Virginia.

There are no others that I'd care to mention as it's best to just hook up with an FFL friend. Except for powder and primers, you're usually better off to just off to order your reloading items from a catalog. Rarely does anyone have what I'm needing.

For ranges you're really hurting. There's a public range out at El Reno, but for $6 a person, it's not maintained at ALL. There are no good benches for load testing and it's largely unsupervised. You can get there by taking I-40 west and exiting at Banner Road. Turn south and follow the signs. H&H Gun Range is also a choice and not that good either. However, it's located between Meridian and Portland just off of I-40. At Reno and Meridian there's a group of restaurants. East of that intersection there is a service road that runs south and is just east of "Trapper's." Turn south here and it'll take you to H&H. My advice here would be to get an associate membership in Tri City Gun Club and that'll give you access to their facilities south of Norman. I don't have their contact information off of the bat, but you can call an acquaintance of mine, Louis Hemphill, at 360-7656 (he's an Allstate agent and a pretty good guy, too) as he's fairly active in the club. Dues are something like $35 a year. Pretty good bargain really. You'll have to attend a meeting in order to apply. They have them at the Midwest City Community Center on the first Friday of the month at 6:00 P.M. I think. Check to be sure.

Like Jim Dandy said, the best deal going is the Tri-Cities gun club. It is $35.00 a year and they do put the money and efforet into maintaining the place. You can't shoot machine guns there though.

One of the best things to do is finde someone who owns land and become friends with them.

There is a public pit south and east of OKC, just be warned that you will need a hunting license to plink on public land! They get ya coming and going in Oklahoma, land of the big tax!

I wouldn't say that. A hunting license is nothing and I am assuming that you do want to hunt, right? Another good thing about TCGC is it will put you into contact with several small FFL holders who will order and receive guns for you at cost. Can't beat that. No silly ass state restrictions for buying like in Cali and a CCW is fairly easy to get. The biggest problem with OKC is that we're such a small market and with transportation improvements, we're getting smaller and smaller since it's easier to drive or fly wherever you want to go and shop. Another plus about TCGC is it will also put you into contact with club members who have or have access to private land where you'll have additional places to shoot. Lastly, you're now in close proximity to one of the best gun shows in the U.S. The Wanenmacher Gun Show in Tulsa is held every October and April and is well worth the drive and price of admission even if you don't buy anything (the next is October 20th and 21st).

I have it on good information that the El Reno shooting range is no longer run by that hateful old bitch. However, the guy that runs it now restricts rifles to the 50 yard and longer ranges. That ought to be really peachy for sighting in or letting your kids plink. The pit that you mention south and east of OKC must be the "range" at Lexington WMA which would explain the hunting license requirement. Another gun shop that I didn't mention earlier is Mustang Gun & Pawn on S.H. 152 in Mustang. They're okay, certainly no worse than any of the others mentioned, but if you choose to deal in there, don't talk with anyone except the owner, Randy. His wife is an asshole and the other occasional employees are just morons. Randy's a pretty square guy, though.

Other posters are correct. Be ready to get everything you need off of the net (at least for the best price) or at gun shows (caveat emptor). The Tulsa gunshow is one of the biggest in the country I believe.

If you don't know already, no good porn and no cold 6. beer either. Legal blood alcohol level for DUI/DWI is 0.08. Though OK law says the 3.2 beer you buy in bars/regular stores is non-intoxicating...don't ask 'cause I don't understand either.

Good service at C&J is definitely relative to what you've been used to in the past. That guy's a freak and a loud mouth, but he does sell Rugers at some fairly competitive prices. However, he hasn't done anything to warrant my time or business.

The legal limit for DUI is a coming thing all over the U.S. Oklahoma's not special here. There was a Federal mandate a few years back cutting off highway funds if the limit wasn't lowered to 0.08. I believe California did this back in '91 when I was out there.

"6 point" beer is a misnomer. If beer has anything over 3.2% alcohol, it's "6 point."

Do not go anywhere near gun country in Norman, shitty range and the owner is a crook.

Again yes. Everyone I know around here calls all beer from the liquor store "6 point" and it kind of rubbed off I guess.


Btw, what happened on Claude Hall's on-line classifieds that made him stop allowing posts to be made? He said to blame it on some poster named Gregg and didn't mention anything else. I searched around and didn't find any posts by this Gregg guy that would raise an eyebrow.

Haven't a clue. Claude Hall has been sponsoring some pretty weak gun shows and I kind of figured his classifieds wouldn't be much different so I never gave them much of a look. Who is going to Tulsa for the [b]BIG[/b] show? I am, but alas, I don't have more than a couple hundred dollars to spend at most. I'm still in negotiations for that much.

There are two shops not in OKC that've been getting some good reviews from those with whom I've spoken. Granted it's a drive, but sometimes good service and prices might be worth it. One is called "The Firing Pin" in Hinton and the other is in Chickasha (sorry, I don't have the name but it shouldn't be too hard to find). These guys aren't going to have a big selection, but what I've heard is that the stuff that they do have is high quality and priced fairly. The kicker is that they'll order in for a fairly reasonable price whatever you're wanting/needing. A lot of the shops in OKC won't do that.

AMHsix, what type of guns will you be after ??

They're out of business now. I work about a mile and a half north of there at a Postal facility.

On C&J Sporting Goods-

The owner is that loud mouth lardass who's now apparently confined to a wheel chair. I have no idea with whom you've dealt. Back in '94 my brother and I were in there one evening, he looking at an SKS and me buying some primers. I wanted a thousand large rifle and a thousand small pistol magnum. The small pistol magnums were on sale and the others were not. That didn't really matter to me, as the big primer "scare" was on following the assault weapons ban and certain reloading components, namely primers were difficult to come by. I just neede some primers. Well anyway, the guy behind the counter (an employee) gets the primers and starts to ring up the sale. The owner and his old lady come through the front door returning from a gun show. He immediately starts yelling, "THOSE PRIMERS AREN'T ON SALE!! DON'T THINK THAT YOU CAN BUY THOSE LARGE RIFLE FOR THE SALE PRICE!!! (to the employee) DON'T LET HIM TRY AND GET YOU TO SELL HIM EVERYTHING FOR THE SALE PRICE!!!" I mean he was YELLING and everyone including the employee was looking at him like he was crazy. I said, "Look man, I don't have any idea what you're talking about, but I am literally out of everything on my reloading bench. I'm just needing some primers. If it's a problem I'll just go somewhere else." All of a sudden his tone changes, "Oh, I didn't know." That's really professional and customer friendly. The few times that I went in there after that he was all over me like he was trying to kiss my ass. He won't get any more of my money.

Welcome to OK. I live in NW OKC and have a bench set up on 160 acres about 20 minutes away.  If you would like to go along let me know, I go out about once a week.  

I am looking for a FFL in OKC area that will do transfers for a little less than an arm and a leg. Any help?

Man, I did not realize how bad I had it here until I read the above posts.  AMHsix, the area is really pretty gun friendly.

I don't know that things are that "bad," but there seems to be a real lack of decent retail gun stores and good public places to shoot. As for independent FFLs to do transfers and whatnot, I wouldn't have any suggestions. The guy I use is outside of OKC and has told me a few times when I've approached him about receiving some items for others that he isn't comfortable handling things for people he doesn't know. I guess it's his FFL and he'll operate it as he sees fit. That's why I suggested earlier a membership in TCGC. They have FFLs as members who'll handle transfers and receiving for fellow members without cleaning out your wallet.

Wow. After that warm reception I could see why you wouldn't want to deal with them. The guy I talked to was about 45, salt and pepper hair/beard, stocky and didn't seem to have any problem walking or appear disabled in any way.

Yeah, you dealt with a different guy. The owner that I know is a heavyset guy of 60 or so with a walrus mustache. I saw him at the big Tulsa show in April and at a small show in OKC a few months before that and he appears to have MS or some other debilitating illness and is now in a wheel chair. Looking at him now, he may be getting too ill to work in his shop. He wouldn't be the kind of guy with whom I'd share a beer.

Uhhhhhhhh...

A little of everything.  I don't have a revolver, lever-action rifle or bolt-action rifle.  Those I don't know much about and really need to handle.  I also want a few more pistols, an M1 Garand and maybe Remington 870P among other things. [:)]

Finally got around to going out to the guns stores.  

Outdoor America - seemed to have decent prices to me.  I didn't like how the LEO pistols were right in front of the "black rifle" area.  Made it seem like the black rifles(AR's,AK's,HK's...) weren't for civilians.  Very good selection, saw about 1/2 dozen guns I want, in the configuration I want them in.

SW Shooters Supply - had Wal-Mart prices, which is good.  Though it did have very little selection, like they just had a sale and they'd been picked clean.  They also need to vacuum.

Mashburn Arms - I didn't like.  Glock 21's were $720, which seems high to me(am I wrong here?).  Had a 6+ Uzi .41AE Carbines for $7000 each.  My conversation there:

Me: "How much are your Class 3 Uzi's?"
Salesman(owners son): "We don't have Class 3 Uzi's."
Me: "How do those Uzi's over there have 10 inch barrels then?"
Salesman: "They're preban carbines."
Me: "So they have 10 inch display barrels?"
Salesman: "They're preban."
Me: "So they're short barreled rifles?"
Salesman: "They're preban carbines."
Me: "How do you have 10 inch barrels on prebans then?"
Salesman: "They're fake barrels.  Their 16 inch barrels are underneath."
Me: "So how much are they?"
Salesman: "$7000."
Me: eyes bulging! (I can get a Class 3 for under $3K!)
Salesman: "They're .41AE.  A collectors item.  They're really not for sale."
Me: "Why have them displayed?" (with POR price tags)
Salesman: "Just something fun to look at."

More conversation went on, but it was the barrel length thing that got me.  Maybe I mumble or I look like I don't know anything and the word "Pre-ban" impresses me.  He seemed bored and wanted to talk to me(someone) I guess.

Overall, I like Outdoor America, but I stumped them(wasn't proved one way or another) with a question too.  They're "answer" was right, I found out when I got home and did research, but they couldn't ease my curiosity on spot.
