Have an idea for a product that I think would work great for long range shooting but not sure what to do with it. Do I prototype one up and then... ??? Try to sell the idea to a company to make it? Buy equipment and make it myself? Patent it?

I know GD might not be the best place to ask but I really don't know how to go from an idea in my head to making and selling a tangible product. Anybody go down this road care to offer a little insight?
