But seriously, what's the point?

Cool, I wonder what giraffe tastes like...

and that would make a cool wall hanging.

Two reasons to kill....survival and meat.
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:56:56 PM EDT
Giraffes piss me off. They're always hanging out with those long necks and spots. Looking down on everybody like they think they're better than you. Fuck giraffes.
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:57:01 PM EDT
Because they wanted to is good enough for me.

What makes that any more important or special than a pig or a deer to an African?

It would be like shooting a horse with a long neck. It's not like it's hard to find a giraffe or stalk up close enough to shoot them with a rifle.

Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:57:44 PM EDT
That does strike me as odd.  It might taste good.

I don't care that they do it, just seems boring.

Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:58:02 PM EDT
Meh, that giraffe probably just flipped him off at wal-mart.

Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:58:06 PM EDT
How else can you get a belt made out of tongue?
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:58:42 PM EDT

Many times the animal is given to a local tribe to eat. So, the trackers and misc. helpers get paid, tribe gets fed, and hunter gets an awesome hunt. Win / win / win.

What's a giraffe's neck like?  He's only got seven bones in it, so it is really stiff and angular?

I've seen them at 5 or 6 yards while hunting. I see why you would want to kill it.

Obviously YMMV

what caliber did you use?

Now that is a great idea.
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 12:59:47 PM EDT
Yeah, that bugs me.  Just not a fan of killing otherwise docile animals that just like to hang out and eat leaves.
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:00:03 PM EDT
If you're going to control the herd, might as well charge some hunters an assload to do it for you.

Maybe it's not the thrill of the hunt, it's the thrill that you survived Africa.

Most of these hunts are for herd control. Get the old males out so the herd can regroup if the old boy is having a hard time.  Personally as long as the population is managed, I could care less if you make a pair of slippers out of the cutest little critters on earth.

I didnt ask how hard it would be to shoot it...

Yeah I know and that's all good and all but I don't understand why someone would want to pay a bunch of money to shoot a giraffe. It just doesn't seem like there's any sport in it.

Kinda like hunting a buffalo, which is something I would do but only because buffalos taste good. I don't think the killing part of it would be all that much fun though. "Look, there's a cow!" BOOOMMM!

Most likely fed an entire village.

Good shoot.

Yeah, but they taste AWESOME!

I didn't claim to be unhypocritical.    And I won't be out protesting or anything.  I just won't go searching for pics, you know?

Does anyone think this is like killing a horse?

If so, what do you base that on?

[a lot harder to kill than a barnyard animal, in fact one of the hardest animals I attempted to kill when on safari.]
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:02:52 PM EDT
I have no aversion to hunting, or personally killing animals, but I have NEVER felt the urge to shoot a giraffe.....
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:02:55 PM EDT
Thats just fucking stupid.....
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:03:28 PM EDT
If he's getting a head mount, he's gonna need one hell of a cathedral ceiling.
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:03:32 PM EDT
Those dudes are total pussies. I once wrestled a giraffe to the ground with my bare hands.

I want a mini giraffe
Link Posted: 4/6/2011 1:04:47 PM EDT

Beats me. Maybe just for a unique mount.

I've seen several species of giraffe in the wild and I think they'd be about the last thing I'd want to kill. They are extraordinarily graceful when they run.

(I'm not an anti. I hunt deer and would love to go on safari.)

I'm so glad I wasn't drinking anything.  That just overtook JA_Magnum's comment as funniest in the thread.

Where did you hit it and how far did it run ?

Also how heavy was the arrow and what broadhead if you don't mind.

And the mini-tread mill to keep it in shape!

Seriously, it seems odd, but I don't care. I'd rather hunt for an Addax or something like that mainly because it would look better mounted in my man-cave.
