I have 12  5,000 peso banknotes from previous trips to Mexico. They are all minted in 1987. My last trip to the Yucatan was in 1990.

I know that the Mexican currency was re-issued in 1994 to stem the economic crisis. But have heard conflicting statements regarding the value of pre-94 Mexican currency.

We're heading to the Yucatan at the end of October, and I want to know if my stash is worth $5000 USD  or $.50 USD.

Anyone? Bueller?

I am guessing the same as a Confederate dollar in the 1870's....

I dunno if they are worthless or not. None of the currency exchange calculators delineate any re-issue date, and I can't find anything on google regarding the current value of the 1987 mint.

With exchange rates being around a peso = $.11, it would be nice to roll down there with $5000 USD for nothing more than having failed to cash the bills back in before I left.

The peso was devalued 1000:1 in 1990. New pesos minted were called "New Pesos (MXN)", and so marked. So the note is worth 5 (new) pesos right now, if they still accept it. Pesos are running around 11:1 against the dollar right now, so that note is worth about $US 40 cents.
