Yet another spider thread.  I was working on my son's Mercedes this morning and when I was done, headed back to the garage with my tools in my hands.  I open the garage door only to be greeted by one of the largest fucking spiders I have seen in my garage.  He was good 4" tip to tip.  I was wearing flip-flops, so I took one of and threw it at him.  I hit one leg, which only made him mad and he took off like a shot.  I put my tools up and go looking for him with broom in hand.  I lift some stuff and he takes off again, in my direction, so I try the broom.  No go.  He does an about-face and heads up the rear tire of my Harley.  Now I have this big fucking spider on my bike someplace.

I drove the truck today.  I'm not about to be traveling 60 mph just to have this thing come crawling up my leg or back.  No way.  And I don't care if you call me a sissy, either.  I do not like spiders.

Here's a pic of what I was dealing with.

You know, in some cultures they capture big tarantulas, roast them over an open fire, and eat them.

It supposedly tastes like crab meat.

HOw big can a house spider be anyway?  I've seen one with a body that is about 1" long (just the body, not including the legs).  Freaked me out!

How come there are so many sissies on this board scared of spiders.

I had one decide that it wanted to dangle off it's silky little rappeling line in front of my face the other day while I was on the computer.  I just grabbed the line and carried it outside.

Well, there are small spiders and there are large spiders.  Small spiders don't bother me.  Big hairy spiders bother me.  Even those banana spiders that decide to string webs across your path at face level aren't too bad.

And throwing a flip-flop at one is tough??

Looks like a female wolf spider (Lycosidae) of some kind.

I know they can get to be about 2-3" across here in Utah, so I imagine that Florida would have even bigger ones.

I remember those when I lived in Miami.  THose were those big suckers that were black and yellow right?  You would look up in the palms and see tons of webs.

The spider often takes on the role of the "phallic mother" in mythology, as an opposing counterpart to the fear of castration.

Now what does that suggest?

One of the most scared times in my life was falling on the ground and finding my face all of 3 inches from this:

Turns out they are harmless. But they are huge, they are brightly colored, and it scared the crap out of me.

I had one of those in the garage, but left him alone.  They usually stretch their webs across trees and such, which I usually walk through at night.  Why do they always have them at face level?

Same reason the one stopped right in front of my face while I was on the computer.  Because they can.

Dude.. that is a good spider.. Hint: they eat the bad ones..

I leave the Wolf spiders in my home alone.. They are BIG and scary looking but they eat the Brown Recluse spiders. Matter of fact if i could buy Wolf spiders and set them free in my home I would do it.

They are nature's way to control the insect population, and most of them, although ugly, are harmless and useful.  If you have spiders in your house, you have bugs, elminate the bugs and insects, the spiders will be gone.  Clean house and garage, use both spider and bug spray, and keep both house and garage clean.  The other alternatives are centipeds, spiders, and spider wasps.

The only execptions: Black Widow and Brown Recluse.  If I see them near my house, I kill them, but if they are in the garden, I let them be.

I kill all Black Widows on the property, they must die, period!
