I've never seen the point of door knobs, not that they're common here anyway.

Cool, I can smuggle black market antique doorknobs up into Canada.

Its for handicap access.
A person without a hand cannot turn a knob. |

I bet congress is already drafting legislation to follow suit. Can't let people choose doorknobs just like you can't let people choose their own light bulbs or toilets.
How are people supposed to put those plastic childproof sleeves over a door level? Is the government going to be held responsible for children getting into places they shouldn't now? Maybe they let themselves outside or drink some cleaner because of it. The government says they are forcing everyone to make their property open to everyone, so they should be held accountable for any accidents or deaths caused by it.

You know you're in trouble when a government takes the time, money and manpower to legislate doorknobs.
Some politicians are just plain fucking stupid. Wait until Kalifornia gets a hold of this. |

I have to admit, I like the lever thingies when my hands are full. My wife and I bought a house in September, and replaced all the doors, trim, moldings, etc. We went with lever knobs on the new doors and they are a lot easier with full hands. Plus they look nice. The cat is going to figure them out one of these days though. |

Do government officials wake up in the morning, make a cup of coffee, and ponder what trivial detail of our lives they can fuck with today? Why, yes, that IS how most of the retarded regulations happen. Those who "can", do. Those who "can't", go to work for the Government and make rules hindering those who "can". TC |

Welcome to A.D.A. enforcement. That type of regulation is already here, the idea that all new construction should be handicap accessible. No steps on homes just ramps, lever doorknobs and faucets, and 3' interior doorways so that a handicapped person can just buy any home without shouldering the cost of those upgrades themselves.

Damn, the Big Doorhandle lobby got to the Canadians now we can all look forward to Peak Doorknobs in a few years as supplies dry up

If that ever comes here, I predict lots of exploding heads in registered historic districts.

I actually had lever doors all over my house and went and changed them all to knobs around the time my kid started standing and walking around a bit on his own. He still has difficulty with knobs but can open a lever handle door like nobody's business. This is a *stupid* prohibition/regulation. |

Its for handicap access. A person without a hand cannot turn a knob. View Quote Levers are easier for old folks and arthritics to manipulate. Dogs, too, and at one time our tom cat would have pulled the lever on our back door if he could reach it. Anyway, Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming and I'm surprised it didn't hit the books sooner. Maybe the door knob industry has taken note of the electrical industry's constant churning of the electrical code as a means to incorporate more and more marginal "improvements" in the name of safety. In the mean time, historical districts all over the US will require round door knobs on the outside of exterior doors in all cases, and in all doors in the structure in some cases. There's a market opportunity here for a hybrid door knob with a round knob on the outside, a lever on the inside, and a clever mechanism to bypass the round door knob to maintain ADA compliance. But the real money will be in getting the requirement for this knob into the building code. |

Ah, Vancouver. As I recall, technically that city requires you to have a construction permit to change a light bulb.
