Just found it interesting that NYPD allows officers to drink while carrying firearms off-duty. Maybe some of our NY guys could verify that. Sounds like a good shoot, guy seemed to be a scumbag anyway and had a history of attacking people. Cop stabber killed

An off-duty NYPD sergeant who shot dead an ex-convict who had just stabbed another officer said he fired his gun in an effort to save his colleague's life, police said.
The wounded cop, John Baumeister, is expected to survive. He was in stable condition late Wednesday at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx with three to five stab wounds, police said.
The 3 a.m. shooting happened outside Rory Dolan's, a popular cop hangout in Yonkers just past the Bronx border.
Sgt. Michael Ingram and Baumeister, both assigned to the 47th Precinct, showed up at the bar shortly after their shifts had ended at 2 a.m., police said.
A third NYPD officer was at the bar with them but was not part of the confrontation, which started when Peter Lee, 20, of Yonkers, and another man were told to leave the bar because "they were creating a disturbance," said Yonkers Police Commissioner Robert Taggart.
It wasn't clear what the problem was, Taggart said, but Ingram and Baumeister "may have been trying to intervene."
Just outside the front door, Lee stabbed Baumeister and Ingram shot Lee, once in the neck and once in the back, Taggart said. Lee staggered 50 feet into McLean Avenue and died after the shooting, Taggart said.
Ingram told arriving Yonkers police that he had fired two shots into Lee "to protect the officer who was being stabbed," Taggart said.
Taggart said it was too soon to say if the shooting appeared to be justified. He also said neither cop was tested for alcohol.
But NYPD sources said it appears Ingram acted within department guidelines and that both he and Baumeister were fit for duty at the time.
NYPD officers are allowed to take their guns into a bar while off-duty and are allowed to drink, so long as they remain fit for duty. Andrew Quinn, the lawyer for the sergeants' union, said Ingra acted heroically.
"He absolutely saved the officer's life," Quinn said.
Lee, who had been drinking despite being underage, has two convictions on his record, one for attempted robbery and one for assault, the latter case involving an attack on a police officer.
The fatal shooting is the first involving the NYPD this year.
