CHICAGO -- An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed a 27-year-old man who had attacked and injured him when the officer attempted to break up a fight Thursday, officials said.

The shooting occurred at about 1:15 a.m. on the street in the 3500 block of West Fullerton Avenue, police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden said at the scene.
The officer was driving home east on Fullerton Avenue when he saw three men beating another man in the middle of the street, Camden said.

After exiting his sport utility vehicle with his gun drawn and announcing his office with his police star in hand, one of the attackers approached and struck the officer over his head with a vehicle anti-theft device, Camden said. As the attacker attempted to strike the officer again, the officer fired his weapon once, fatally shooting the attacker in the head, Camden said. The victim's identity was withheld pending the notification of family, NBC5's Lisa Tutman reported. "He could have driven past the man and gone home, but he stopped and saved this guy's life," Camden said. The other two men from the beating, one carrying an aluminum baseball bat and the other a tire iron, dropped their weapons and ran after the officer fired his gun, Camden said. Two men were later picked up and taken in for questioning.

The officer and the man who was beaten were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Camden.

Mental note: don't bring 'The Club' to a gunfight.

Outstanding.

Too bad the officer couldn't peg the other two.

Hopefully the guy getting beat up didn't deserve it - I doubt it since one of the beaters attacked a cop.

Too bad that in Chicago, any citizen couldn't have done the same (saved the victim).

I think he is being sarcastic, notice how ANY article or news report will have the "victim" being the one who got shot REGARDLESS of any circumstances, such as the dead guy having been (raping, beating, stealing, killing, kidnapping), etc.
