Sheridan and Sherman. Fucks be upon them for the war that they waged upon southern civilians, but damn they were some cold-heartedly effective mother-fuckers. I guess by extension I should extend the same respect to Grant and Lincoln for approving and ordering total war.

If my 98 year old great-aunt hadn't passed last year she would have slapped the shit out of me for that previous statement.

Edward I,  Johann Tserclaes (Count Tilly) and Lord Wellington on the Scottish side.

My family in Ye Olden Days tended to hold grudges to the point of some of them fighting for Napoleon just to get a shot at getting some more shots in at the English but the Napoleonic Wars were the last time that happened, we got better. Although since more than one of them also fought for Gustavus Adolphus in Germany the 1600s with no English about, I think they really just liked to fight.

Otto Skorzeny was a badass.   Evil, but a badass nonetheless.

Tenacity, skill, and an ability to think outside the box.

I can't get down to specific generals, but learning WWII history has taught me a lot of respect for the military capability of Germany at the time as well as the resolve and will to win of the Japanese. I wouldn't say that I respect them as a whole given who they were and what they did at the time, but the fact that Germany was able to conquer what they did as fast as they did is admirable to say the least. The resolve of the Japanese in fighting as hard as they did with as small of a population as they had, even the citizens training to fight the U.S. Military, is also admirable.

I think they both learned not mess with the bull though.

von Saucken as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietrich_von_Saucken

A cavalry officer who regularly wore both a sword and a monocle,
Saucken personified the archetypal aristocratic Prussian conservative
who despised the braune Bande ("brown mob") of Nazis.
When he was ordered to take command of the Second Army on 12 March
1945, he came to Hitler's headquarters with his left hand resting
casually on his cavalry sabre, his monocle in his eye, . . . [and then]
saluted and gave a slight bow. This was three 'outrages' at once. He had
not given the Nazi salute with raised arm and the words 'Heil Hitler',
as had been regulation since 20 July 1944, he had not surrendered his
weapon on entering....and had kept his monocle in his eye when saluting
Hitler.

When Hitler told him that he must take his orders from Albert Forster, the Gauleiter
(Nazi governor, or "District Leader") of Danzig, Saucken returned
Hitler's gaze....and striking the marble slab of the map table with the
flat of his hand, he replied 'I have no intention, Herr Hitler, of
placing myself under the orders of a Gauleiter'. In doing this he had
bluntly contradicted Hitler and not addressed him as Mein Führer.

To the surprise of everyone who was present, Hitler capitulated and
replied "All right, Saucken, keep the command yourself." Hitler
dismissed the General without shaking his hand and Saucken left the room
with only the merest hint of a bow.
