"OWNED" has its origins in computer hacking.   It  was the term computer geeks used to signify that they had obtained "root level" (i.e., full administrator) privileges in another computer.  They "owned" the system at that point.   Often they would insert a text file with the word "owned" as their trophy indicator.  Or they would deface a web page with the word "OWNED"

In time, other computer geeks (the geeks trying to protect the systems) developed automatic searching programs that sought out the word "OWNED" within the system files and brought these instances to the attention of the "real" administrators.   In turn, the "leet haxors" began playing games with how they spelled "OWNED" to avoid these sweeps.   Ergo,  "PWN3D"
