There's a piece of u-shaped glass that slides with a hole in it. The two people holding the paper are in on it. The paper isn't actually touching the glass where they are holding it. The sign is behind the glass but not on it.

It's an illusion. There are a lot of ways to fake this gag. The easiest is to have the window (which is probably Plexiglas, not glass) only attached at the top and halfway down the sides. He just bends the window out at the bottom and steps through.
