If I had to choose one..

FAL of course.

I'll go with whatever hesse or special weapons puts out.

I'll pick the M1A.....I owned a HK91  parts are too hard to get

I'm gonn go with the 10 on this one. I have one of those "flawless" ones that goes bang everytime.

Never fired any of the other choices though.... FAL's are heavy, no?

M1a all the way...Mostly because they don't make a .308 Famas though lol...

Fal with the saiga .308 second.

whats the going rate on a FAL, new and used?
Link Posted: 12/24/2004 9:45:39 PM EDT
I presently own a tricked out AR10, it is more accurate than my M1A but, if push came to shove, I would take the M1A.

FAL of coarse.  $600 to $900 range for a good looking FAL.

hmm id have to go with the M1A  (when properly tweeked).
But i do have a soft spot for the ar-10 though.

id really like to see  a head to head shoot out between all the battle rifles listed.
That would be interesting.

I have it narrowed down between a FAL and a M1A.  Leaning toward the FAL....

I own all of the above except the Galil. The M1A is my favorite. They are all fine rifles. There's no way you can definately say one is the best.

I have to also vote FAL.

I didn't like the HK91

The M1A is nice but I don't trust wood on a combat rifle (except maybe a garand, but thats a different class).

AR10 - don't have enough time on platform to have a valid opinion yet.

Galil or Valmet would be a distant second - that noisy AK type safety....

I'm watching this one intently. I own a PTR-91(HK91), and am looking to add to the collection, but the first will be a Garand in .308, so I'm thinking that negates the M1A. FAL might just be the way to go!

Out of what's listed, I've only fired an M1A, FAL, and an AR-10.  I enjoyed them all but was most comfortable with the AR10 since it's so much like my AR.  I guess I'm bias.

How can a site dedicated to the best rifle in the world (The AR15) Not pick the AR15 on steroids the awesome and accurate AR10! Makes me smile when I load a 20 round mag with bullets 3 times the size of an AR15. Then I proceed to make little bitty groups with it. SWEET!
Link Posted: 12/25/2004 2:53:12 AM EDT
I guess if I had to pick one; the FAL.
Link Posted: 12/25/2004 3:01:01 AM EDT
With my limited experience, I say FAL.
Link Posted: 12/25/2004 3:01:22 AM EDT
Had a HK 91a3 and couldn't find a spare MAGAZINE for anything, saw adds for them but all were out of stock, this was in 1989. Didn't live up to the reputation in my book.

Then got the M1a springfield,,the accuracy just wasn't as good as everyone else said it would be, recoil was harsher that what I was expecting, and the stock just didn't fit me. I always felt I was reaching for the sights.

Now I have a FAl, the stock fits, Magazines are cheap and lots of them out there.

So for me the FAL is the best.
but then again what do I know

No 1919A4 semi-auto?
Link Posted: 12/25/2004 4:30:39 AM EDT
AR-10 would be my first choice followed by the M1A...

I voted FAL, but once my AR10 is running 100% I might change my mind...
Link Posted: 12/25/2004 4:55:31 AM EDT

Has the best sights, best trigger, and easy to manipulate.

FAL has inferior sights & trigger. Reliable, accurate & ergonomic though.

HK91/G3 has inferior trigger & is harder to manipulate. Reliable too. Recoil is heavier but still not objectionable as far as I'm concerned.

AR10 would be my #1 choice except for the fact that reliability is unproven.

I think it depends upon what type of support you have. Having said that;

AR 10
M14- M1A
HK 91

Well, I've owned a real 91 and AR10 and BAR10 and I now have a FAL.

Reliability, at least so far, has to go to the 91, without a doubt.  No gas system to dick with, and though it gets filthy, I have never been able to shoot one until it quit from fouling.  However, it has a nasty recoil, no last-shot bolt hold open, and it handles like a plank.

The AR10 was too front heavy and unreliable, and mags are too expensive.  The BAR10 ran well, but was too barrel-heavy and did not seem to be as rugged as I'd like.  The gas block was held in place with setscrews rather than taper pins, the barrel is not chrome lined, and the mag release is somewhat stiff.

So far, my DSA Para-FAL has a great balance, is very solidly built, and uses inexpensive mags.  I don't have enough rounds through it to speak confidently about its reliability.  I also don't know about the gas system...I hear about guys having to dick with them after 5-600 rounds, to put more gas into the system.  We shall see.  So far, I like it the best of any .308 battle rifle I've owned.

What about the SR-25?  I'd seriously consider that if offered.  Until then...FAL.

My vote goes to the M1A.

How many special ops types do you see in iraq using FALs?

I have both a FAL and an M1A. I agree, if i'm humping all over kingdom come, i'll take the FAL. It's lighter, and more ergonomic. But based on Function, Feature, and accuracy, I'll take the M1A. Very simple action, very little margin for error (i still have to tune my FAL gas port depending on the ammo), it jsut seems simpler overall, leaving less points to fail.

Well, I spoke to someone last week who is very involved with NSW, and he told me that someone bought a quantity of FALs from DSA for use in Afghanistan. Take that for what it's worth, but I personally guarantee this guy knows what he's talking about.
