Game Allows Players To Act As Terrorists

POSTED: 11:26 am CDT October 27, 2006
UPDATED: 11:56 am CDT October 27, 2006

GALLATIN, Tenn. -- A Gallatin man is drawing attention for a computer game he created that lets gamers act as terrorists.

Gallatin Resident Develops 'Terrorist' Video Game

In the game, players try to complete tasks like killing anyone and everyone who stands in the way, and the enemies are U.S soldiers.

Steve Carr said he enjoys playing the game he spent the last six months creating.

The players are members of al-Qaida with the objective of setting off a dirty bomb in the CIA building.

“This is really a game, and it kind of enlightens people and shows them what its like to be the terrorist,” Carr said.

Carr said he put the game on his Web site four days ago and said hits to the site have increased by more than 1,000 percent since then.

A game where the objectives are to complete terrorist missions and kill American troops is raising some eyebrows.

"I think that people should be able to create what they want. I think it’s sick and twisted. I think it’s sick and twisted to play it,” said Nashville resident Marc Mazzone.

"I think it’s wrong. I don't think it should be done,” another man said.

Carr said he used to be in the Army and said the game is not meant to degrade U.S soldiers or the work they are doing overseas.

“It’s nothing against our troops who are finest troops in the world. I support our troops. I support what we are doing over there,” he said.

Carr said since he finished the game and put it on his Web site that he has not received any criticism from anyone who has looked at it or played it.

Carr said he hopes to create three more al-Qaida themed games, and he said right now he is considering one where the terrorists hijack an airplane.

Is it really that enromously different from WW2 games that allow you to play as Germans? Just because it was 60 years ago, it's now entertainement to fight for the nazis?

It'll probably just be a matter of time before some video game company comes out with "SS concentration camp guard: the game"

Yeah...but that was 60 years ago....
Hitler is dead (or living with Elvis in South America) and the war is over.

I cant even imagine what might possess a person to create a game like this.
Who is expected to enjoy playing it?

One of the things that makes America what it is, is the idea that citizens are free to exercise freedom of speech....which leads to reprehensible shit like this game.

Frankly, I would like to think that the CIA or FBI at least is keep an eye on this character.

Sick asshole.

we all know what is going to happen. some idiotic, depressed teenagers will play it a lot. they'll shoot up a school. the parents of the victims will sue the guy who made the game.

relax.

Well, there's more proof that our society is really going down the toilet.

Contraversy just for the sake of it. Same with lyrics and other pop-culture junk.

Sigh...
Link Posted: 10/28/2006 8:59:56 AM EST
I can only hope that he made the game so that it is impossible to win.

Mr. Carr needs to be exiled to Afghanistan if likes AQ so much.

Why not have a game called "Beat the Fag" or "Kill the Cop" or, my personal favorite, "Sniper in the City".

Some people are just sick........Could this be that guy from Syracuse NY that used to have the web site where he
posted how all the soldiers should lose their benefits, lower their pay, and die ?

ETA: What was his name ?

The Grand Theft Auto games pretty much allow you to play endless variations of both of those.

Shit, I would love to play that game in real life. Only I'd imprison Socialists, Communists, Islamo-fascists, etc. in my camp.

ETA: Actually, the Nazis were no friends of the Communists. There are no Nazis left so I'd put neo-Nazis in to keep it balanced--far left and far right.

Looking at it that way, our own government financed a game where people could play as terrorists!

*GASP*

I don't see anything wrong with playing on either side but, I don't think his intentions are solely dedicated to making a good video game especially if it involves some of the things listed in the original post.

By reading that article, I just think he is trying harder to piss people off, than to actually make a good product...

I won't be buying it at all...

Two games that let you play on either side off of the top of my head are America's Army and Battlefield 2 (Just the modern day or near future stuff).

When you are playing as the bad guys, neither game focuses on commiting terrorist acts.

Even in the WWII games where you play as the Allied or Axis forces, you aren't killing Jews playing as a Nazi or, raping Chinese women and mutilating corpses as Japanese soldiers.

On the other hand, imagine the hell that would break loose if someone offered a game like that.

It is within his right to do this but, it is in very bad taste.

I think there is a huge double standard...

the market place will decide the games fate

you can play against US soldiers in tons of games
BF2, medal of honor etc
Link Posted: 10/28/2006 9:35:35 AM EST
This really isn't anything new. Hell, you can play as a terrorist in Counterstrike and kill counter-terrorist operatives from various western countries including the US. In Battlefield 2 you can play as a Chinese or Middle Eastern soliders and kill US troops. These are also many games where you can play as a thug or mobster and commit various crimes.

Poor taste is not going to be a 'death blow' to anything.

Not saying I like what he's doing, in fact I think he should be tared and feathered.

However, what about Command and Conquer Generals, where you can fight as the GLA (terrorist organization), killing U.S. Troops?

What makes one game ok, and not the other?

Link Posted: 10/28/2006 9:48:20 AM EST
I'm having a hard time thinking of any online war game (that involves the US) that doesn't let you play on the other side.

Yep, or any of the command and conquer where you can play enemies of the US. The last one Generals you can even play for the terrorist army. No difference and I did not hear anyone complain about bad taste when that came out.

Do you see lots of people in this thread calling for the banning of such games? Or making them illegal?

I see most people in this thread complaining about how this kind of stuff is in POOR TASTE - not that it should be illegal - and others expressing their frustration at how previously inappropriate and unacceptable things are gradually becoming mainsteam in our society.

Agreed. I'll say the game is in poor taste, but that's his problem. I personally wouldn't buy the game, and I could care less if other people buy it or not.

Best thing to do about things like this is to ignore them, deny them the kind of publicity that they need in order to thrive.

Games like this primarily succeed because of shock value, nothing more than attention whoring as applied to commerical advertising.

If people ignore it and don't buy it, it will go away. It is, after all, a video game. Calling attention to it only helps advertise the game.

Yep. A lot of dickheads, some of whom post here, don't seem to understand the difference between "you can" and "you should." Just because you're free to be an asshole doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I think it's a matter of perspective. Psychologically, small-unit stuff is considered to be more personal than large-scale strategic stuff. It's illogical, but it's how people operate.

It's usually easier for men to kill other men from a distance, not being able to see the enemy up close makes it easier to dehumanize them. Look up Lt. Col David Grossman.

+1; and Counter-Strike is (I'm sure) better than this guy's game. Accurate weapons too - (i.e. the terrorists use AK's and Mac-10's, while the good guys use M4's and TMP's)...

This is the same thing they said about CounterStrike.
The game was good guys vs. bad guys, somebody had to play the bad guys.

I don't know why you'd make a single player badguy game... but I guess its similar to The Godfather or Scarface, since killing cops is no more honorable.

Of course, you don't have to agree with this guy,
to agree he has a right to make a game like this.

Games that allow you to be the 'bad guy' are hardly new.

Postal and Postal 2 featured you as a recently terminated employee trying to get back at the world (and run errands for the bitch of a wife)

Delta Force Black Hawk Down lets you play as skinnies fighting American troops

Most of the Tom Clancy Rainbow Six games allow you to play terrorists klling Americans/Brits

The entire Grand Theft Auto series (do I even need to go into detail on this one?)

Battlefield 1942 and its expansion packs let you kill American troops

Battlefield 2 and its expansion packs let you kill American troops

All 3 Command and Conquer Red Alert and Command & Conquor Generals involve attacking and killing American Troops by terrorists (and soviets, and the chinese)

As well as the literally dozens of other WW2, both games based on Korea, and a few based on Vietnam all involve the ability to target and kill american troops.

So other than the fact that this game is apparently based on a war we're still fighting, what exactly is the big deal?

Unless those of you bitching against this actually believe that violent video games caused Columbine and other assorted school shootings and somehow believe that a game where you play a terrorist will somehow convince the kiddies to go blow shit up?

As i see it, the more time someone spends in front of a TV or computer screen, thats time spent not making our lives miserable in the outside world.

Well yes and no.

C&C Red Alert 2 came out about a week before 9/11.

The first Soviet mission involved levelling the pentagon, and the third mission involved the WTC.

less than a week after 9/11 all copies were pulled from store shelves and westwood came up with some new replacement missions for the sovs.

Ive got both the pre-ban and post-ban copies of the game, but that is about the only whining i ever saw about the C&C series

I think it is because of the nature of game. a german soldier is soldier, a terrorist is a terrorist. defending one's country is a admirable affair. I have not yet seen a game where you are a natzi party member, rounding up jew for C-camps. The WWII games depict soldiers not killers
