What is stopping a private enterprise from starting a postal service? FedEx comes to mind. Is there some type of law?

Techinically, only the USPS has authority to use YOUR mailbox. So they'd need to change those rules first.

It's illegal for anyone but the government to deliver first class mail. This from the people who want MicroSoft's ass because they say they're a monopoly.

They'll solve this problem by raising the price of stamps. These guys get paid the big bucks for innovative solutions to the USPS's inefficiencies.

Yes, by law only the post office may deliver letters or documents unless they are time critical.

Services such as mail delivery unfortunately lay in the hands of the government because the private sector could/would not take on such a task. In urban enviroments it would be fine, but wouldn't you be pissed when you had to put on an extra 10 stamps on a piece of mail because you enjoyed living in the country. -bc
