To keep it simple.

Someone back home called the ex-wife(they are still on good terms) of one of my guys pretending to be from the Red Cross and delivering a message that he had been injured.  He hung up on her before giving very much information.  Naturally she contacts his current wife and both of them freak out and call our 1st Sergeant back home who then calls the 1st Sergeant here.

We get the word and go wake the guy up and have him call home to let them both know he is fine.

I guess it could have just been a mistake, but the fact the ex-wife was contacted instead of the current wife along with the fact they hung up on her makes it very suspicious.

Intentional or not, this sounds like the work of a douchebag.

How credible is said ex-wife? Perhaps she is a troublemaker? He may think they are on better terms than actually are.

ETA, Merry Christams and stay safe!

Thanks for the well wishes guys, but we are probably safer here in Kyrgyzstan than back home. Other than the occasional revolution, there isn't much going on here.

As far as the ex goes, I have no idea. They seem to be on good terms from what I have seen and heard from him. Who knows though?

If the ex wife still has the number she might give that to CID or someone to persue. It would seem to me that causing emotional trauma and grief to a serviceman's ex wife would be  a crime, it is to me.

Is there a way somebody could profit from playing out that rouse?

Lots of scams going on these days.

Seems like there was something a while back about people calling service members familys posing as red cross or military and asking for social security numbers and DOB's ect.. to "verify" they were calling the right family about an injured soldier.

That was an identitfy-theft ring. THere's another bunch of POS anti-war leftists that were doing it just to sow terror amongst servicemembers' families.

Apparently there is a Phishing scam going around right now using this technique.  Our 1st Sgt back home did a little internet digging and came up with it.

This type of story just made the news here in Canada as well.

Someone gets a list of active serving members, calls their first of kin and tells them they are hurt/dead and it goes downhill from there.

This just happened a couple of weeks ago, IIRC.

My dad used to be a flight engineer on C-5's. He'd be off flying on some trip and some douchebag from his flying squadron would call my mom telling her that he was killed in a plane crash somewhere. She freaked out the first time or three this happened and wound up calling his commander to make sure everything was ok.

She finally fixed the callers wagon. My dad left for a 2 week trip to Hickam... that night the dude called saying my dad was killed. She responded "Awesome! Now I can collect his life insurance!" then hung up on him.

They caught him and disciplined him. He'd been doing it for weeks as a prank to other military wives too.

yeah I'm no martial arts master but I think a few guys with those rattan sticks they use for sword practice would be the ticket for the beating.  Should take at least the better part of the day to do it right.

I am not sure how they are dealing with it back home.  Our commander and 1st Sgt are handling it though.  A squadron wide email was sent out to warn everyone about the possibility of being contacted by one of these idiots.

Dear dog...gross misconduct.  I don't care if I hated that person to no end...I would never even DREAM of sending a message like that.

That, to me, borders pure evil. Complete and blatant disregard for a persons feelings.

Army CID can easily get the number from the Telco based on the time of the call. Doesn't matter if it was showing as 'unknown' or 'blocked caller', the Telco will know. Get somebody with rank to light a fire under their ass and make them investigate.
