Is this stuff rare or did I listen to the wrong idiot?
Link Posted: 2/12/2006 3:48:15 PM EDT
It can't be imported, so supplies are limited.

rare because it's a no no round since the 7.62x39() round is shot in a pistol, and no ap rds for the pistol

It's rare, and some of the best ammo I've ever shot. If you can get some, get it.....it's hot as hell, but kind of dirty. I've got about 100 rounds left I've hoarded for a long time.

It was banned from importation because someone (Oympic Arms, I think) came out with a 7.62x39 pistol. Pistol ammo considered to be AP is banned from importation/sale. Poof! 7.62x39 became a pistol caliber.

HISTORY LESSON!
Olympis Arms made an AR15 pistol in 7.62x39mm.
They were asked by many not to, as doing so would result in a ban on the importation of steel core 7.62x39mm.
They did it anyway, ATF declared steel core 7.62x39mm illegal for importation as it was AP ammo that could be fired in a pistol.
A pistol, like the one below.
Yea...I know.

Gotcha. My brother got reamed today on a Norinco SKS for 200 at a gun show, but the guy had about 60 boxes of it at 6 bucks a box. He got 2 of them.

I didn't know they sold rifle ammo in lots smaller than 1000
Link Posted: 2/12/2006 4:12:54 PM EDT
A lot of what they push as steel core AP 7.62x39 is in fact steel cased and not true AP.
It is corrosive ammo so cleaning requires more than solvent. Windex and then hot soapy water if you want take proper care of your weapon.

I've got about 20rounds of the stuff.

Are you saying he paid too much? That is actually a reasonable price depending on condition. I would like to get a Norinco but the Yugo's are so cheap they are hard to pass up. Especially since they are C&R.

I saw at least three guys selling it at the Cedar Rapids gun show last weekend.
I only remember one price. $8.00/100.

I should have bought it, since it was cheaper than new Wolf.

It wasn't in good condition at all. And since they normally go for $150 tops in good condition around here , yeah I'd say he got reamed. Then again, some Yugos here go for 200

So, what about M855 with the SS109 steel core bullet? Almost all AR manufactuers are selling .223 pistols now.

because:

Exemptions: The following articles are exempted from the definition of armor
piercing ammunition.
5.56 mm (.223) SS 109 and M855 Ammunition, identified by a green coating on
the projectile tip.
U.S. .30-06 M2AP, identified by a black coating on the projectile tip.

BATFE declares AP ammo as ammo with a certain percentage of the core material the same as the jacket material. So even without the exemption that the penetrator has, it does not meet BATFE requirements for AP. Thus it is freely tradeable via the US market.

The SS109 doesn't meet the definition of AP ammo.
Definition says the entire core must be made from one of a list of metals.
The core of the SS109 is half steel, half lead.

Not to mention, as prefiously mentioned, it was specifically exempted.

I put that chinese 7.62x39 ammo in the same catagory as the black tallon ammo. It is a lot of hooey. It was popular because it was decent ammo and cheap. It isn't true AP ammo. It has a steel core, but it isn't hardened steel. If it isn't cheap any more, I don't want it.

A good reason to never buy an OLYARMS gun.

I've been keeping an eye out for steel-core 7.62x39mm and 7.62x25mm ammo for a while now. No luck finding either at gun shows, nobody on ARFCOM wants to sell, and I can't get a straight answer or whether or not the Tokarev ammo would be illegal to own or it's just illegal to import/manufacture more. I'm inclined to believe the latter.
