This is an old film from 1993 but it is a classic in understanding the manner in which the media is manipulated (today we would say created) in order to convince the People to think a certain way. We can easily see the manner in which some people in this country are being manipulated to believe that the Bill of Rights does not mean what it says. If you can convince the majority of Americans that the 2nd Amendment does not mean individuals have a right to own an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine then you have successfully manufactured the consent of the People to be disarmed.

This film outlines the manner and means in which the current marketing campaign to de-brand the NRA and cast all patriots as dangerous extremists not worthy of Constitutional protection is being executed.

It is a long film and most likely not able to hold the attention of the average GD reader. But for those of you who are intellectually inclined, it is worth watching in its entirety.

For those of you who need a teaser of what I am talking about.... here is a salient quote from the film. "The media is to a democracy what violence is to a dictatorship. It is the means by which a society is controlled."

Yes I am familiar with his work and it seems to me you are not. He is an anarchist and I understand where he is on the political spectrum of things. That being said, what he says in this film about the means of creating consent through the manipulation of public opinion is right on. I can find value in that and ignore the rest of his work I do not agree with.

It comes down to this. I personally know of people who truely believe that an AR-15 is a machine gun and a military weapon that is too dangerous for a civilian to own and is not covered under the 2nd. Since they have never fired an AR-15 and have never even held one, you must ask the question how did they come to that conclusion? If want to answer that question then watch the film. We are up against a huge machine of marketing public opinion to a planned outcome. When they are successful at that task we will loose. If you want to understand how that is taking place.. then watch the film.

This is the issue that conservatives and gun owners just can't wrap their heads around:

This gun control (And lots of other 'issues') are part of a far reaching plan. Nearly every single anti-gun law or restriction is all tied together, as we've clearly seen.

People got complacent after the AWB ended, and Heller came down. We now know, from old tapes, that this sort of gun control was planned over 20 years ago by people like Holder at Columbia, and the ilk.

Couple that in with an administration that's pretty much stole the last election, revamped all sorts of new, pretty damn scary laws, and you see that's it's all part of what the democrat party of today really believes.

And we're all hunky dory with it? Most are, why? Media.

Politicians know that there are lots of tools on Facebook and YouTube, and all they have to do is dumb a message down enough, cry a bit, and these morons will spread it, for free. That's the Media too.

Here is another example of my point. I read this editorial and understood a few things:

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-patriot-groups-splc-report-20130308,0,2444361.story?track=rss

1) This is not a random editorial by a single person, but rather a cog in a larger campaign.

2) It is the second phase of the war against the 2nd.

3) It is not written for our consumption, but for the liberal retards that read the LA Times..

4) The purpose is to start the idea in the left's realm of thinking that we, gun owners and patriots are not like them. In fact libs are supurior to us in their thinking and even though we have not broken any laws we are dangerous and deserve to be watched.

5) The eventual outcome of this new phase in the marketing campaign is to get libs to the point that they believe we, gun owners and patriots, are so far outside the norm and such a great threat that we do not deserve to be treated in a Constitutional manner. In the end, they will believe that it is ok to round us up, shoot us, jail us, kill us, and such.

Rush has an audio clip taken back when Dick Cheny was selected as GW Bush's VP running mate. In the clip, there are over two minutes of 5-10 second sound bites from many media talking heads using the uncommon word gravitas in more often than not, the same phrasing, to describe Cheny's contribution to the campaign.

The point is that not only do the media personalities responsible for editing, producing, and presenting the news act with a herd mentality, but more importantly, they get their daily script outline from a very few news sources, chief amongst them the New York Times. If the times uses a certain phrase, or even a certain word, the rest of the media, lemming-like, will use it as their "own".

O'Brien's and Rush's examples demonstrate this perfectly.

Yes, the AP or, Associated Press. Supplies a good percentile of the scripted information that the newscasters read. Of course, we know the source for most of the AP's drivel..

As one who has (1) watched "Manufacturing Consent" before, (2) done so as part of a philosophy club meeting in uni, (3) used to hang out in djarum and patchouli-reeking coffehouses... I have to fully agree with 2minkey.

Fuck Chomsky. We can defend ourselves and fully grasp the world without resorting to fucking CHomsky.

Chomsky's work is in the same category as Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals." The socialist left has employed tactics from these to great effect and conservatives have been hard pressed to hold the line. Lately, we have NOT been holding the radicals at bay.

It worked for propping up Slick Willy during the impeachment.

It worked for the outrage over Abu Graib.

It worked for Obama and the Benghazi cover-up.

Without a doubt, his views and mine are vastly different.... but to completely dismiss his ideas due to his politics is short sighted. He has established himself as one of the "foundation thinkers" of the extreme anti-American left. As such, we should pay attention to what he has to say so we know what to expect from the talking heads and parrots.

Chomsky is more Commie than Commie.

And the whole premise behind 'manufacturing consent' is pretty straight-forward. It certainly doesn't require sitting through nearly 3 hours of Chomsky's uber-left drivel to understand it.

Another documentary along the same lines that is well worth watching...

Century of the Self
Link Posted: 3/17/2013 12:35:39 PM EDT
In Propaganda (1928), Edward Bernays argued that the manipulation of public opinion was a necessary part of democracy:

The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.

He did write the book on this stuff...

The interviews in Century of the Self with Bernays daughter are all time classics. Bernays was laughing his @ss off at the American public, who he openly exploited.

Chomsky is deranged. For example, he was a huge supporter of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot in Cambodia. Whenever reports came out about the atrocities they committed from refugees in Thailand, he called it American propaganda. Eventually the evidence became so overwhelming and irrefutable, Chomsky stopped apologizing for the Khmer Rouge. But he said the US put them in power so the atrocities were really ultimately the US's fault.

He's crazy.

“Some even believe we [Rockefellers] are a part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United states, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure—one world, if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I’m proud of it.”

the bullshit doesn't just come from the left.
often times propaganda does not have the desired effect.
excluding morons and children propaganda is obvious to everyone but the persons it attempts to seduce.
if it does anything to that person, it's only because they already wanted to go marching, meaning they are typical fascist losers desperate for some meaning in their lives.
and, again, it's not just the left pulling this shit.

gee, i am sooooo worried.

I am glad to see that this thread got back on track. I do not give a fuck about Chomsky. I give a fuck about how many many Americans are being manipulated into believing that they do not have a right to keep and bear arms. I reference Chomsky because when it comes to manufacturing consent, he is right on. We are witnessing it first hand and if we do not understand it and adapt to their efforts then we will loose.

I work with young people and see the effect of the marketing campaign first hand. They do not get the Constitution the way we do. They do not see the NRA in a positive light. They do not see gun ownership as being valuable. They do not see self-defence as being their right but rather someone else's job If we do not counter act that, we will loose eventually. That is what I care about and that is the point of this thread. We need to understand how this war on guns is being fought. If we do not we will be like Romney who sat there on the couch on election night and was shocked to discover he lost the election. While Romney was running an election campaign, Obama was running a marketing campaign and we know the results. (The fact that I have referenced Romney does not mean that I voted for him, admire him, agree with him about everything he says, have had lunch with him or any other assumption you feel the need to make.)
