No one is going to die and leave me money, I'm not a gambler so no power Ball coming my way, the only money I'll get is what I go to work and earn, but at least I'm a overtime slut.
Just went through an outsourcing and the very 1st check with the new company had 31 hours of overtime at a grossly miscalculated rate of $199.71/hr. I was talking to my Chief Engineer this morning, and he said they said for me to just keep it....about $4,000 I don't deserve and was rightfully prepared to have them take back......woot! 2 cases of Golden Tiger, two 1,200 round cases of ZQI SS109, and a case of 90's production German .308 Nato...compliments of the new company. Still bitter about being outsourced, but this was kind of nice. |

You're insane. Go get this straightened out with payroll right away.
The longer you wait the more unethical you appear. |
|
Maybe the Chief Engineer also got a grossly over paid check and did not want to call attention to said problem?

I can't believe you didn't buy a bunch of fucking pressure washers... |
|
Wait until 4 moths down the road some higher up finds the discrepancy.
Then you better hope you have $4000 in the bank. |
|
|
This happened to me in the past. They will get their money back.
I did the same thing and told payroll so they adjusted my commission check for a few months until they were paid in full. |

|
Better stick it in a savings account and not touch it for a while OP.

Does your Chief Engineer have any authority to tell you that? Like others have said, do you have that in writing? You could be charged criminally for that. You admit that you know it was a mistake and that you didn't earn it. That is theft if you don't have a written agreement that you can just keep that much money.

Great plan, OP! Buy ammo now while it's cheap and available, then pay back employer later a bit at a time... almost like a free loan!

They outsourced us power plant guys, the HVAC guys, and the electricians. A number of us....a good number of us, got crazy checks. I think the people on the local level are embarrassed about this, but it was them that gave the word that any of us that got it can keep it, the Chief was just relaying what they told him.
I dimed myself out right away in an email to a few of the new overlords, including the regional HR person, so I did my part. |
|
Thanks mr chief engineer, I think I'll check with HR/payroll too.

I'd wait to hear from HR in writing before you spend a dime.

When they ask for it back, drop a dozen cases of ammo on their desk.

Don't get it in writing. Sorry, but it's dumb advice.
If you want to get all official about it and go by the book by bringing legal paperwork into this situation, then sure they'll go by the book and take their $4k back. There's literally no reason to get it in writing. You already have the cash, and they have the right to reverse it. Don't prod them into exercising their leverage here. Keep your mouth shut and be prepared to pay it back in the next year if they ask. Consider it a gift from the universe until then |
