Developing: A Nigerian militant group says it plans to destroy major oil pipelines in the Niger Delta in the next 30 days to prove it has not receive payment from the government to end its campaign, Reuters reported.

The head of the state-run oil firm NNPC told Nigerian newspapers on Wednesday that the company had paid militant groups $12 million to protect facilities in the oil-producing Delta state.

"To prove that we are not a part of this deal, the Chanomi creek pipeline and other major pipelines will be destroyed within the next 30 days," the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said in an e-mailed statement, Reuters reported

So much for China having a source of cheap oil.

At one time the Chinese were talking about sending troops to Nigera, I guess that fell through.

China depends on Africa for some 30 percent of oil imports and has invested heavily in top producers Nigeria and Angola.
